[Equis II] Soundtrack/Music Information · 12:57am Aug 4th, 2015
Hi all,
So, as you know, I employed the use of optional soundtrack from the Metroid (Prime and Other M) Series to help with immersion into the story, and it seemed like people liked it; if you wanted it, great, if you didn't or didn't really care either way, you didn't have to listen at all. This post for the people who liked the extra soundtrack.
I will be lacing Duality with occasional [suggested listening] links as before, but in many situations that will be unique to this story, the Metroid Series does not adequately portray with their soundtrack, and while the largest brunt of any optional soundtrack will be strictly from Metroid, I will be employing the use of soundtrack from other games to more accurately set the mood for certain areas. As an example, Metroid has the PERFECT music (and often a variety of it depending on specifics) for suspenseful situations, ominous situations, paranormal situations, environmental situations, etc. There are plenty of those to be had here in this story, and moreover, there are a myriad of different remixes which are excellent and I will be using them as well (e.g. OCRemix). Certain things the soundtrack list lacks, however, are things such as general, fast-paced action combat (either small pieces/unextendable, or downright inappropriate for the particular scenario). As such, I will be (potentially) using supplemental tracks from the following games:
The Halo Series (a few potential scenes. Halo was always great at invoking emotion and imagery.)
The Command and Conquer Series (for a few scenes, especially with its plethora of action-y combat themes)
The Ace Combat Series (most likely for one scene only)
The Call of Duty Series (most likely only from World at War and, if at all, for one or two scenes only)
Red Orchestra 2 (only a consideration for a potential scene which may not even make it into the story)
...and others, if I need it.
A few may be against this because it may violate the immersion of being a 'Metroid Game,' but that's why I don't embed the music directly, and that's why it's optional.
So, as a TL;DR, the suggested listening for soundtrack is coming back in full, and Metroid OST will make up a grand majority, though for certain and often specific situations I'm gonna have to outsource to other game series' OSTs.
Any questions and/or comments, go ahead and sound off below.
Other M's soundtrack is okay but there really is only one reason to use it:
Just be aware that EMIYA is one of the greatest combat BGMs ever:
Maybe I'm in the minority here (probably because I never played the Metroid Prime games (never had a Gamecube)), but I feel like the Metroid soundtracks are the least appropriate for an epic war story (or even an adventure story). Metroid music (even the NES game to an extend) was more atmospheric, in the background and during the action sequences, it stayed in the background and went for a more suspenseful tone.
Your choices are probably set in stone, but if I could add in my two cents, I'd suggest the Ys series (especially the Chronicles version of the first two games, Ys Origins and Ys SEVEN). They have a good mix of rock and metal that feels more colorful rather than gritty. Perfect for action scenes set in Equestria.
3293082 That's pretty much what I was getting at: Metroid's OST is best served for background/environmental ambiance and not really for brutal combat (same is true for the Prime series). I'm sure a fair amount would agree with that, actually.
3293124 Indeed. That's kinda why I'm wondering what you'd think of my suggestion.
3293134 I'll look into anything anyone suggests, especially when the need arises during the story. As of right now I'm just making sure that the release this weekend will go seamlessly, so I'll let you know.
I'd recommend 117
from Halo 4.
Metal Gear Rising has some good ones, check out It Has to Be this Way (Instrumental)
That Piece is incredible, as well as basically most of Xenoblade Chronicles.
Unfinished battle is a good example of a track from there.
And for full on Brutal Combat, look no further than You Will Know Our Names
Metroid Metal might give you the fast-paced/aggressive action music you're looking for. I recommend the Boss Medley, Space Pirates, Item Room, Ridley and Sector 1. Sorry for the belated suggestion.
