Story Length · 4:08pm Jul 29th, 2012
So....
I've almost finished the last chapter in my latest story, but there's a snag... It's about 40,000 words long... I feel as if that is too long for a single chapter. But then, I don't know WHERE to split it up, if at all.
What do you guys think is a good length for a chapter, usually?
Personally 8000 is a lot for me, Ideally 5000 in one sitting. But if you're cutting up something like that (A beast of a story) I'd say chapters anywhere between 8000 and 15000 words long where appropriate.
try cutting off at the most dispendsful part, makes people want more!
First of all, is that the completed story or just the first chapters worth of writing? Second, if that's just the first chapter than I guess I'll never get any writing done 'cause I'll be reading that when ever I'm on here. Also a good length for a chapter in my opinion seems to be anywhere from 5000-7000 words or so, but again that's JMO. If the story runs well and doesn't have any transitions than I guess we'll have to sit through 40000 words.

Clarifications!
The CHAPTER is 40,000 words, out of a planned 40+ chapters. I guess with the general consensus, it would be a good idea to break the chapters down into at least 10,000 word chapters, but who knows... I might just be mean.
That was fast. And also do what you want man. My free time is limited by my athletics and work, also school coming here soon but I've loved all your work so far so I'de find time.
I guess I'm the odd one here. In my opinion, the longer the chapter, the better. Yes, shorter lengths are fine, but my mind compares each long chapter to a piece of candy. It's basically a treat.
Then again, I do have ample time to read it in one sitting, where as others do not.
Eh, if you can't find a place to split it, keep it all in one chapter. People will read it either way.
