My girlfriend has always told me that the internet is a place where all kinds of people interact, and sooner or later, I had to get some kind of negativity directed at me. The main shocker is that out of all things I thought I might get negative comments for, I had never thought it was going to be about my gender.
Yes, I don’t always act feminine, but to think that me being a girl could be called into question? I’ve never faced that before in real life. What gets me even more is that I don’t understand why it's such a big deal in the first place. I’ve always believed that your sex shouldn’t have to dictate how you act. That kind of thinking is what gave us gender-roles, something I very much don’t want anything to do with. I wish gender wasn’t even tied to people’s opinion of you, and that we should only decide on how we feel about people based on their personality.
I didn’t respond to the message I received, because I’m pretty sure that saying anything to them would just add fuel to the fire. I know I shouldn’t let some stranger’s words hurt me, but it still got to me on a deep level. I guess this is just the first in a long line of issues to come, especially with how much more people are starting to notice me. Its probably mathematically impossible to not get another comment like this in the future, which makes me feel pretty bad inside. I love this community, everyone I had met so far seemed to really try hard to live up to the idea of friendship and tolerating others. I know that it didn’t mean we were exempt from negativity in the fandom, but it still feels like a stab in the heart when I see it.

I'm sorry you had to go through something like that. Nothing infuriates me more than ignorant comments based on stuff like gender or race, and nothing tears me up more than seeing someone hurt. The best thing I can think of for a situation like this is a Dr. Seuss quote: those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

My condolences. It's awful when crap like this happens--it's that sort of thing you hear about, but never really expect to see yourself. I know it's difficult to first come across that sort of thing, and I hope it didn't leave too deep a mark on you.
