Gender Breakdown in Equestria · 4:12am Jul 19th, 2015

I decided to do some research into the gender breakdown in My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. To simplify and have solid numbers I used only named characters from the MLP wiki. Here is what I found:

Total
When doing the gender break down I used all named ponies and looked to see what the breakdown would be with only ponies that had more screen time (which is a bit subjective). The percentages came out the same for both groups.

Breakdown by Kinds
I omitted non Ponies from these charts for simplicity.

Breakdown of Antagonists

hmm, very interesting. I'm glad that you made this, it could prove most useful for me. XD

Wouldn't it make more sense to group villains when they appeared as groups rather than individuals?

mm mm mmmmm dem pivot tables :) Always good to see Excel-fu on display

How did you get all this data? Is there some sort of export tool available for the wiki?

She was not the antagonist in that episode. The true antagonistic force was the situation itself. In a real way neither Lightning Dust or Spitfire were "wrong" per se. The tension came from her loyalty to her friends versus following what she felt was right.

I typed it. It would be nice if there was an export option but don't know if one exists. Once typed out it was a simple use of pivot tables in excel as 3265025 said.

Nice analysis of the sexes, maybe it'll put an end to that "six mares for every stallion" nonsense.

You're missing a couple of female antagonists: Diamond Tiara and Babs Seed.

Intresting and good idea not using the background ponies that would be a whole another can of worms.

3484301 They aren't truly antagonists as they are foils. And, really, neither are bad anymore.

3485669 A foil can also be an antagonist. The terms aren't mutually exclusive. Lightning Dust, for example, is both.

A foil is a character that "shows qualities that are in contrast with the qualities of another character with the objective to highlight the traits of the other character." (source: http://literarydevices.net/foil/). That doesn't sound like either Diamond Tiara or Babs Seed. However, it does sound like Suri Polomare, Sunset Shimmer, and Trixie.

Also, if being reformed is grounds for disqualification, then Nightmare Moon, Discord, Trixie, Gilda, and Sunset Shimmer don't belong on the list either. Which is just silly. A character's current state of reformation has zero bearing on whether they were originally an antagonist or not.

3485867 You know who else isn't on there? Cheese Sandwich. And according to your standards, he is indeed an antagonist. While not a villain, an antagonist can be somewhat evil. I guess my point is that DT and BS aren't and never were truly. Chesse Sandwich isn't either. Yet... Okay, in truth, I see your point. I'm sorry.
