Settlement Stories, an Untapped Genre. · 10:04pm Jul 17th, 2015
Sup my fellow bronies and pegasisters. Today I wanted to point out something that I've noticed, not just in this fandom but pretty much across the board. Settlement stories, or more accurately, stories with the focus on building, or growing a settlement. Now to be fair, I might just be a blind fool, and I'm missing these kinds of stories. But it seems to me like there is a serious lack of these things. To be fair I wasn't interested in this kind of story until I started playing DnD and somewhere along the lines, I began wanting to run a tabletop game with the focus on this kind of story.
Moving on from where I originally got my interest I than began playing lots of video games that had similar themes; from Terraria to Dwarf Fortress, and even to a personal little favorite, Craft Your World. I've played lots of these games. and I loved each one of them. Then I realized much to my sadness that there is a distinct lack of these kinds of stories out there. In terms of tv shows The Walking Dead has had this feeling done fairly well, though they are really bad at keeping a settlement, I mean how many times have they had to restart by now?
I really enjoy the concept because it's not just about creating something, but its also about the people who live in the settlement. It has both adventure, to find the resources needed to keep the settlement going, to slice of life stories about people just living their lives. It can have political intrigue where the noble caste or the mayor might be corrupt. It can have a criminal group move in, thus forcing the local sheriff to deal with the situation. Heck you could have two rival farmers start a clan war at the gates of the settlement. All of these things exist in this kind of story, and more to the point, they are all connected and effected by one another.
So out of the various projects that I wish to write in the future, a settlement story is among the top of my list. Drama, adventure, intrigue, and romance would all have their places in this story, and they would all be effected by one another. So what do you guys think? Is there actually a huge lack of these kinds of stories? Or am I just blind and missing them completely?
Btw if you know of, or find any stories with these focuses let me know. I'd love to check them out. XD
