Bad news: Next update was deleted by my computer, saying that the file was corrupted, both on my back up memory stick on the computer itself. That's all I'm going to say since I lost about 9K words in the blink of an eye. I'm really pissed off that I have to do a rewrite, so the chapter will be delayed.
But, even the rewrite will be delayed due drawing projects and other things. Sorry, but writing isn't really one of the first things on my agenda.
I lost a 10K+ story the other night, I know that feel
I apologize in advance for possible stupidity, but can you change the file format? Because I had a chapter corrupt on me when my laptop ran out of power in the middle of typing once. 2-3k in (bad, but not as bad as yours). Got desperate. There was an option to change file formats. Changed it to .html, and surprisingly, it opened up. Granted, I had to reformat the texts a bit, but it saved my work.
I've had that happen to me before. I lost a f5-6k word chapter, and had to rewrite it three time because of computer errors. And that included all of my back-ups. I have since taught that computer how to fly.

This isn't really the first time this has happened, heck, I recall this happening to a fic I have planned. I had the first chapter written, waiting for the right moment to publish it since it would be a small side story to H.T. But, computer said it was corrupted and deleted it. So, I had to try and rewrite it, and I still want to go over that very same chapter.
254996 I taught myself how do makes holes...with my face...and a wall

My computer deleted the file itself. I can't even get it from the recycle bin, since it isn't even there. I tried to do a computer search for the file, only to come up with a negative result. If I could found the file, I would've probably done the same thing.

That incredibly sucks. Very sorry for it. Rewrite probably won't have the genius as the original, with that looming overhead. Good luck.
That incident is also what now causes me to save chapters as two copies (A and B). Hit the save button, then hit the save as button every two minutes. Then at the end of a writing session go put what I have on FiMFiction. It got me paranoid.

I do that when I write at sixth form, but since it is summer break... Yeah, I broke that habit. I wish I did back up on FiMFiction now. Learn from your mistakes, I guess.
I'm not looking forward to the rewrite, then again, I guess I could make a better build up to some action than what I had put in already. The chapter will probably be shorter than the original, or longer. I still want it to be at least 5,000 words, since that is a reasonable size chapter.
255012 Dash - something is wrong here... Computers don't delete files by themselves. Either you have a virus or some hardware problem with your machine. "saying that the file was corrupted" - what do you use to write? Is it a laptop or a tower (stationary) machine? Do you have any problems with applications / random system restarts / unexplainable system crashes? Have you checked the memory? Do you have any bad blocks on your HDD?
What do you use to write? MS Word? OpenOffice? LibreOffice? Notepad (sorry - no help here - this program is too primitive; try PSPad or Notepad++ :) ? Did you set it to make an automatic backup every time you save your work?

I use MS word for writing since it has spell and grammar check. As for the deletion, I found out at a wedding that my mother went and cleared my back up file while I was in the shower, saying that it needed to be scanned and she didn't think to click "Do not scan, continue anyway."
Trust me, my mom isn't really... good when it comes to computers. She even thinks Internet Explorer is superior, just because, and I quote; "It looks nice."
As for viruses, I have none. Hardware problems, none. I use a laptop.
Looking back, I see quite a few problems with what I had in the chapter, so I'm going to do a rewrite soon.
Honestly, I don't really give a fuck about this subject any more. I'll start saving on FiMFiction as an extra back up, like I used to.
255915 - Today it was a relatively minor problem. Did you consider what would have happened if the file was REALLY important? You need to have a good backup plan. Perhaps giving this thread a read would be a good idea? Remember to set the Word up to always save everything with a backup.
ps. I don't have any other suggestions on this so I will shut up until you encounter the next problem .
I really hope to see you back at full strength.

I'll try to get it done. Right now, I've been writing, about to post, go over the chapter, see how bad it is, scrap and retry. I'll post whatever I have by the 18th. Although, I won't have much time to write since I have a lot of art projects coming my way.
I lost 9,000 words in a blink of an eye and the Internet just fucking watched.
Guess the quote.

GAH! I've heard it! I'm guessing it's Sheperd from MW2? If not, then I don't know.

You are correct.
