Remember the "Ballad of the Crystal Ponies"?
Fluttershy sings the line "They had a petting zoo with tiny ewes."
What if this book, being old, isn't an exact translation, and "Petting Zoo" is actually a euphemism for a brothel. You know, like the other definition of petting:
Phrase used in old-fashioned teen sex manuals for foreplay without intercourse.
They used to engage in heavy petting down at Lovers' Lane.
The ewes aren't there as farm novelties. They're sapient and very much there against their will. They're "comfort Ovines". They're POW sex slaves.
Makes Sombra's reign a lot darker, eh?

Actually, that came from their history before Sombra.
Which means it would have been the dark overlord trying to suppress stuff that could have been worse than him.
Maybe the crystal heart is only powered by Crystal Pony love and joy? Gotta keep citizen morale up somehow and brothals are good at that.
