With Regard to Princess Spike · 1:52pm Jun 26th, 2015
The newest episode, until tomorrow, is Princess Spike. While this episode was a decent one, as Spike-themed episodes go, I believe it was a terrible choice to immediately follow Slice of Life. Of course, the producers of My Little Pony could never hope to top Slice of Life in popularity among Bronies, choosing to decline even a bit of effort to match it was detrimental to the show, as the statistics showed (Nearly half the number of viewers Slice of Life had). Once again, it wasn't that Princess Spike was a sub-standard episode, quite the contrary. Quality wasn't the issue here in my opinion. I think it was the content. To follow a shameless fan service episode like Slice of Life with a single character focused episode was one of the most horrible ideas anyone in production at My Little Pony could have come up with. The best possible follow up, after validating hundreds of thousands of people's head-cannons would be to remind fans of what got them into the show in the first place. Something like Cutie Mark Chronicles, or Magical Mystery Cure would have been optimal. Bronies love My Little Pony for the characters, the adventure, the relationships. Giving the fans what they want, then reminding them what they love about My Little Pony, statistics notwithstanding, would have yielded a much more positive result. I liked Princess Spike, and I appreciate the fact that his character development has started to broaden past "Humdrum", but space it out a little! Give us the Mane Six! Going two episodes without my beloved Pinkie Pie and Rarity is just too much!
