Princess Spike, thoughts and feelings. · 2:04am Jun 22nd, 2015

...*sigh* You ever been left with so much excitement and joy after watching an episode of something only to have all that joy turn to rage and disappointment on the next episode after it? That's how I feel about watching 'Princess Spike' after seeing 'Slice of Life'. Well, here we go...

Canterlot is holding a royal summit for dignitaies from all over Equestria. The four Princesses are on hand to manage the event, including Spike. As it turned out Twilight was tasked with setting up the event...By herself...Alone...FOR THREE DAYS! Sorry, we'll come back to that.

After three days without sleep, Twilight is in no shape to meet diplomats and Cadence tasks Spike with watching over her and making sure Twilight gets some much needed sleep. To do this, Spike is given unofficial temporary power to speak for Twilight to keep others from bothering her. At first Spike tries to help Twilight sleep, but he quickly grows a liking to the power and starts to abuse it. The plot becomes fairly predictable from there, following the same kind of formula we've seen in episodes of much lesser shows before.

Now for my opinions. Its bad. While we do get to see a few new background pony designs (one that looks like the police woman from the movie Fargo, and what I can only call a Vanilla Ice pony), this sadly is a Spike episode, and I mean that in the worst ways. Spike is the focus and once again he finds himself in trouble he really should have been smart enough to avoid. We do get to see his devotion to Twilight again and he's not the shows punching bag at least, but we hardly get to see him shine.

Beyond Spike, this highlights a problem I started to notice recently. All through out season 4, Twilight wasn't given much responsibility as a Princess. However, now the opposite is true, she's been given too much. Celestia tasked Twilight with organizing the last Grand Galloping Gala, and now the organization of one of the most important diplomatic events in Equestria. While Twilight preformed both to perfection, this last one left her exhausted and mentally out of it. Now, the normal thing to do would be to have Twilight get some rest and inform the visitors to come to the elder Princesses for issues and problems that may arise.

Instead, we see through the episode more and more ponies showing up at Twilight's bedroom door with minor issues that Celestia or Luna could have easily solved in seconds. However, both royal sisters are missing through the rest of the episode with only Cadence to provide any help, which she only does once Spike is in over his head. The episode seems poorly made with a number of easily fixed mistakes that the staff really shouldn't be doing 5 seasons in now.

But, that's my opinion. Tell me what ya'll think.

I agree, it was not that good. The princess plothole, as you pointed out was massive. Also, the writer for this episode was a writer for Johnny Test, it's style of comedy being QUITE apparent to me in this episode. Overall, meh. It wasn't good but it wasn't bad. This new guy has issues is all I'll say. He's not super experienced, his only two previous bodies of work being Fish Hooks and like said above, Johnny Test.

And FYI, next weeks new writer ALSO wrote for both shows.. And Kick Butowski,..And he created Shorty McShortShorts for Disney....Y-Yaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy....

3169456 Personally, I liked Kick Butowski. Was it a master piece? Oh hell no, but I enjoyed the crazy over the top humor. I think that could work for the next episode, since its a Pinkie Pie episode. Its the Johnny Test and Shorty McShortShorts parts that worry me.

Yeah, and honestly. For me it's ShortyMcShort Short's and Fish Hooks that worry me. I'm sorry, but I hated fish hooks.
