Princess Spike Review · 8:27pm Jun 20th, 2015
So today we have our first Spike episode of season five and-
"NintendoGal! Where's your Slice of Life review?"
Oh, right. That. XP Well, I just didn't know what to say about it. Nothing that others haven't already said. So, I'll be lazy this time and link you to Dr. Wolf's video to sum up my own feelings for the episode!
Anyway, before I was rudely interrupted by own writing, let's get to it, shall we?
So our story this time is that a big friendship summit is being held in Canterlot. It's a gathering of all the delegates from the major cities in Equestria, preparing to give speeches, meetings, receptions, and what have you. Twilight is understandably exhausted after seventy-two hours of making sure the moon won't fall organizing the whole thing. So Cadance enlists Spike to help make sure Twilight isn't disturbed while taking a nap.
Now Spike is trying all he can to keep things quiet, but with little to no success in doing so. At least, until he realizes that if he does make orders on Twilight's behalf, they'll be carried though by the other ponies. Huzzah!
Of course, it goes about as well as you'd expect. Spike lets all the power go to his head, becoming a voice for Twilight and getting into the idea of being "Princess Spike". Not only that, but chain reaction to everything that's happened comes to a head. The unfinished water main bursting, the dragon sneeze trees falling from being too top-heavy, the gem statue is broken, and of course, the ponies are arguing profusely. All while blaming Twilight for her apparent decisions.
When Twilight wakes up, she has quite a disaster to fix up. Spike feels terrible and manages to explain everything, not just to Twilight, but to everyone else as well. He realizes that he did get carried away, that being in a position like a Princess was a great feeling. Even with his good intentions, it evolved into something worse and he let the privilege get to his head.
Admittedly, I would like to see Spike in a position where he isn't the cause of the problem. Yet, they also took that idea and actually made it work! This is definitely something that fits perfectly for him, not just for his character but his relationship to Twilight. He really is the closest person (dragon, I know) to her and practically is her right-hand man, so he would be taking advantage of this. So it was still a good lesson to learn!
The episode had its share of silly moments, one of which definitely being Cadance's raised eyebrow expression at Spike. It was pretty funny to see her of all ponies making that face! So overall, this episode is very simple, but it's enjoyable regardless.
Why the other Princesses didn't volunteer to take over for Twilight while she rested, I have no idea.
Still an entertaining episode though, it does show us how well Spike knows Twilight and how close he is to her. And he does figure out the lesson he needs to learn, while his intentions, though they went wrong, were indeed good.
3166518 I think it's safe to say that they had their own duties to take care of, while Twilight essentially had her own as well. I think that's a part of why Cadance wanted to make sure Twilight would get some rest, because she knew there was only so much they could do to help.
But yeah, agreed! X3
3166693 Though, to borrow a quite from Dr Wolf, I do hope we'll get more Spike episodes where he isn't the CAUSE of the conflict in his episodes.
