The results of the World-Building Alliance's latest contest are in, and somehow, my little tale about especially little ponies won.

Can't say I saw that coming. Still, it gives me an excuse to talk a bit more about this one.

It should come as no surprise that a story I wrote with Black Lotus art for a cover image took some inspiration from Magic: the Gathering. Specifically, Lorwyn, the quasi-Celtic land of happy faerie tales (as opposed to Shadowmoor, its grimmer, Grimmer self.) That plane also has a race of insectoid creatures who harvest something to feed to a giant flower who has power over the entire local universe. In that case, however, the insectoids are also humanoid, they harvest dreams, they don't have to leave the universe to get those dreams, and the flower is also humanoid. And kind of a bitch.

Wait, that isn't right...

The portal in "It Ain't Easy Being Breezies" pretty much cemented my headcanon about an equine Multiverse. Still, Breezies are definitely nicer about the harvesting than Lorwyn faeries. (At least, their own stories are going to portray them as such.) That they have families means that they don't have the same "social insect" organization. They're born from one another in the usual manner, not from Oona's flowers. Given that, adjustments needed to be made. However, dreams and feeding the flower still played central roles in the brainstorming process. Throw in the Tree of Harmony as a fellow magical, sapient world-plant, and everything came together.

Thanks again to the WBA for liking this so much.

Congratulations.

Man, I loved Lorwyn. Still probably my favorite Magic setting.

>didn't recognize Black Lotus on the cover
Welp

That's it for me.
Ritual Sudoku or bust

How 'bout them Flipwalkers, though?

They're visiting it in Magic Origins! Apparently, it was the first plane Nissa planeswalked to. I can't imagine the local elves thought much of her...

To be fair, it was a special edition bit of alternate art from 2003. You can keep your honor without ritualized number puzzles.

Also, dem flipwalkers, man. Dem flipwalkers. :rainbowkiss:

I'm really looking forward to drafting the set. Should be lots of fun.

Congrats on yet another victory in the WB department :raritywink:

And WHERE do you find such good MTG:FiM art?

Grats! It definitely had some quality world-building.
