The last research paper I worked on has published at last.

The process is REALLY slow. I finished all my work on this 3 years ago.

    https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2316969121

This one uses a lot of my histology and in-situ hybridization with RNAscope results.

But no more science for me. Now I build houses and driveways... and rip them apart too! It's a sort of yin-yang thing I've got going here.

A comedic scene from a new Clouseua story I'm fiddling with...

I just came up with this, and imagining Peter Sellers delivering the line had me laughing for 5 minutes straight.

Clouseau, "For you see, the murderer was... the bullet!"

    Guy in room, "The bullet?"

Clouseau, "Of course, no one would suspect the bullet of firing itself!"

Woman in room, "But that... that's madness!"

THE PIRATE KING BREAKS THE NETFLIX ANIME ADAPTATION CURSE!!!

Only the Pirate King could do it...

It's as good as possible. You cannot do such a goofy anime any better than this, and it's GREAT! I friggin LOVED it.

Last call for Bronycon items up on Ebay!

I'll be delisting all remaining MLP items Sept 1st to focus entirely on selling my huge stash of collectible magazines, which take up vastly more space than the MLP items. Everything here fits into a single flat box I can pick up with one hand. The magazines... weigh over 700 lbs total. Sooooo, kinda makes sense to deal with those ASAP!

100th episode... da fuq did I just watch? · 10:19pm Jun 13th, 2015

It was like a totally random fanfic... but canon... some of it sorta worked... some of it was totally absurd... but it's all official canon now because nothing at the end retconned it by making it all a dream or the CMCs attempt at creative writing...

All I can say is, no true professional writer would have done this to their own material. Indeed, most writers AVOID fanon at all costs... for this very reason.

It ends up being too confusing and utterly alienates many fans of the proper canon who hate certain fanon ideas. It feels as if the writers have cherry-picked some people's ideas and slapped everyone in the face with them while ignoring everyone else's opinions.

It's a BAD IDEA. That's all there is to it. I actually chuckled at the secret agent Sweetie Drops part... which I assumed must have been an early hint that this was all going to be retconned somehow since it just made no sense outside of a fanfic about her and Lyra... and then it was suddenly canon, nothing was undone... and I got this horrible sinking sensation in my gut.

This is one of the ways series are destroyed, people. Always remember what happened with "Star Trek: Nemesis". This may very well be the Pony "Nemesis".

What an awful episode. And Im not even surprised, I had a bad feeling since when this episode was announced.
If this is the best the writers can give us then Im not sure I want to keep following this show.

3146374 And of course all the inspid, drooling fanbois are declaring it the best episode ever.

Ugh, it reminds me of all the fangushing over "Revenge of the Sith" because it was 'bigger and darker' than the others.

Sometimes I am utterly convinced that the human brain is devolving.

I'm starting to get a 'Battlestar Galactica" vibe from the series: that the writers have no actual direction, no idea what to do with the world they have, and no idea how to end it when the end finally comes. Individual episodes may turn out decent, but as a whole, the series is all over the place. Inconsistency eventually destroys interest in a series. Just look at how the frequently awful writing and continuity-violation of the last season of "Doctor Who" crushed the ratings, for example.

I imagine Lauren is not particularly pleased, as she was truly professional in her work. She would never have allowed this; which I know for a fact since I had dinner with her a few years back and we talked a bit about the danger of allowing fan ideas into original canon.

I just took it as a silly for-fun episode. Like this was just the whole cast and crew just making an episode that was pure fun for botht them and the fandom. So really I don't understand why everyone is in a tizzy about it. Next week, we'll be back to more friendship problems same as usual.

3146501

Seriously mate... it was just a little bit of fun on the part of the writers. Next week we're back to the friendshipiness and spike abuse. And I also think it was a misbegotten attempt of them to stop the lesbian shipping of two characters, but... eh

3146374 :pinkiesad2: Bro... it's just a tribute episode by M.A Larson, it was in no way a representation of the show, or his overall talent, as a whole. I personally enjoyed the randomness for what it was, a celebration and a single one shot for him to let loose. A time to say thanks to the fanon for its support.

But even if it wasent your thing, seriously, come on. You're gonna stop following over one "bad" episode, that's like you deciding to stop being someones best friend due to them hating one of the things you happen to like. It's shallow reasoning.

3146654 Because it doesn't belong in the series. It doesn't fit the continuity. And it takes directly from fanfiction, a no-no in any basic creative writing class.

Had this been something truly for fun, some special shown to bronies only, perhaps I would not be so annoyed. But this is INTERNALLY CANONICAL now. ALL OF IT. Even the parts that contradict what has already taken place.

If they just drop everything established in the episode... then what was the point of it?

It's not good storytelling, which is the one thing I asked of the series.

3146878 I speak as a proper critic. From a critical perspective, it was a move no legitimate show would ever make.

It's something I expect from "Teen Titans Go!" or some other farce of a show with a solid narrative.

I think that many people are forgetting that this show is still for little kids, and we are adults that watch it and review it like it was on par with Game of Thrones or something.

3147036 I'm not stopping yet. I'm saying that it's a warning sign they're playing a little too loose with the storyline if they didn't even think to add a 'disclaimer' via a Dream trope or some other means to indicate that the events are actually noncanon.

I had commented on the preview images weeks ago that this would likely only work for me 'if it was all a dream' because adding fanon to a show's official canon is problematic for far more reasons than I feel like listing. And not just purely from a creative standpoint. It also creates issues with copyright, as the show is actively incorporating fan ideas, some of which can be traced back to individual stories... thus creating the appearance of a corporate acceptance of any fan work, leaving C&D attempts less credible in the eyes of a court.

I'm not making this up. This is a HUGE factor in why no one with a creative work includes fan content and writers are instructed to avoid reading fanfiction. It creates real legal problems in the long run. ESPECIALLY from the people who feel slighted that their Special Suzy ideas weren't included. Vindictive fans can be costly.

They've opened a can of worms which may turn out to be parasitic.

So, in conclusion, from any angle one looks at this from a professional perspective, it was a bad idea.

3147123 See but the thing is, it's inherently bad writing to retcon anything. They'd hurt their reps even moreso by doing this. They knew what they were doing when they went for it. If they wanted an easy way out they could've simply ordered this entire thing to be played out in the comics. It was put into animation simply to celebrate the hallmark. I thought it was pretty obvious that none of this is going to play heavily on the rest of the show canon. She show has, and will always, have a central focus on 14 characters. The Main cast of the Mane 6, Spike, the CMC, Celestia and Luna, and Discord. Anyone else who shows up is either for one or two episodes (Maud) or is the villain. But we still need the support cast of everyone else to round the show out.

I had commented on the preview images weeks ago that this would likely only work for me 'if it was all a dream' because adding fanon to a show's official canon is problematic for far more reasons than I feel like listing. And not just purely from a creative standpoint. It also creates issues with copyright, as the show is actively incorporating fan ideas

It's not adding to canon, it's worldbuilding. Giving everyone a personality. It's what keeps a show running. The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, Fosters, Powerpuff Girls, and other current cartoons like Adventure Time all have large and diverse casts. It gives FiM new plots to explore and ponies to involve. And now that each character has a voice, they can be used more in other storylines and situations, like when Lyra was under mind control. As stated before, if we only focused on the main 14 characters, ideas would run dry.

As for fan ideas this was a one time thing and it really didn't use that many. Vinyl and Octavia are roommates: sure, fan nod I'll give you that one. Bon Bon and Lyra: nope this has been a thing since day one, unlike V&O, the fandom basically predicted the future from the show's first inclusion of them. It was canon before we got to it. The Doctor: completely original personality, the only fan influence was the nod to Doctor Who in the end with the scarf and catchphrase. Bon Bon: just the writer having fun, nobody in the fandom came up with that. I'll also give it to you that it felt like a fanfic. Plus, unless the show decides to run with the plot she introduced, it'll most likely never come up again. Steven Magnet knowing Cranky: that's just backstory, pretty awesome backstory infact. Big Lobowski:(The Bowlers) just another reference brought back from way back in S2.

Tl;dr: The only big fandom idea/nod was Vinyl, Octavia, and Derpy; who, may I remind you also had a pretty original personality given the situation.

3147095 Even little kids shows don't incorporate fan ideas to this level... No show EVER has. No book series ever has. Heck, intellectual properties have gotten in trouble over similar things.

3147226 Stephen knowing Cranky was one of the things I LIKED. THAT was what I was hoping for... but the little moments of genuine in-world creativity were then ruined by the over-the-top fanon.

The secret agent Sweetie Drops... ugh... that was so awfully out of place with the entire world of FiM. And it's CANON now thanks to this episode. I'd rather they retcon it and weather the brief storm of butthurt fanbois who like the idea despite its absurdity. Those are the same fanbois who always rally around the 'more pony!' cry, so they'll shut up quickly and swallow the next tripe shoveled to them.

I, however, have far higher standards and MUCH longer memory. I do not forget details of things which have held my interest.

Oh, and Bon-Bon HAS been a secret agent in several fics. So has Lyra. And I know there was a grimdark fic where one of them worked undercover in a monster hunting squad hired by Celestia. But there is no way I'm going to try looking for it. It was at least two years ago and I didn't like it, so I have no idea how to find it again.

3147276 Personally a group of friends and I, while discussing the show earlier came to the funny conclusion that the secret agent thing was simply a way for Larson to make use of both of her names, Sweetie Drops and BonBon. Alright then, assume that it's not just a coincidence, and put that in with the count. And, being generous, I'll count the premise of the episode itself too in terms of flagrant pandering. That makes 5 fan nods among the... lets count
Steven Magnet knows Cranky,
The Second marriage and kiss scene in a kids show
Personalities given to most of the side characters
Celestia and Luna character development
Changeling plot point that can be explored later.
Another interesting beast in the shows growing monster diversity
Even though it was stupidly executed, the fact that there was a, now defunct, monster capturing squad in Canterlot at one point could be interesting to explore down the line.
And lastly, the issue with Derpy and her voice and eyes has finally been resolved. TSG redeemed herself by getting it right this time. This isn't so much fan jerking, as it was resolving a major issue with one of the shows characters, and it's relationship with the audience, that Hasbro has been dancing around for almost 3 seasons.

5 bad fan pandas vs 8 good story elements. In any case, I'm not trying to convince you the episode was the best. Frankly it wasn't, the pacing was too erratic and again BonBon Agent was stupid and could've been done better, I'm just saying to look at the good that outweighs the bad. It's good to see both sides.

3147276
Ehh... I guess. Still liked it though. In any case, wouldn't you agree the mlp realm has become de facto property of the doujinshi fan base awhile back? I mean... I have never, ever, in all my years seen an intellectual property, not pokemon, star trek, anything, inspire so much fan works and of such high quality. Its unsettling

3147345 The little moments were just that, little. Meanwhile, the Octy-Vinyl stuff was the largest single scene and grew to a "Regular Show" level of sheer insanity to the climax.

It doesn't help the episode to have a few good points here and there when the parts taking most of the limelight are feeble.

As for the changeling plot point... it wasn't a plot point. It was a single changeling just sitting there, apparently oblivious that everypony nearby was freaked out by it. You can make anything you want out of that, from it being nice changeling to nothing more than throwing a changeling into the episode because changelings are a fan favorite and it had no relevance whatsoever. There's nothing to it at all.

The fact that I've already seen dozens of people are making so much of its presence and drawing conclusions with zero evidence only reiterates how ridiculous fanon usually is and why it has no place in a proper official work.

3147415 No series should ever become the 'property' of its fans. 'Fan' is directly derived from the word 'fanatic'... and fanatics tend to ruin whatever the touch.

Soccer riots, for example.. :trollestia:

3147478
well, of course we have our Chatoyances and christian weston chandlers (who has earned the title of the original brony)

3147453 *Sigh* you can't stop people from having an imagination. Even less so can you keep them from speculating its how our minds work. Don't understand, theorize. Something odd happens, try to explain it.

Fanwork, if worked on hard enough will eventually evolve into official work of some kind. What you call official work, is simply a writer sitting around, much like we do, and going, "I wonder what would happen if I--" Then seeing out that plays out. The only difference between us making fan work, and their work, is that theirs is licensed and animated. If Larson wrote something up on his off time, and put it here(not that he could by contract), is it fan work, or is it canon grade material. I respect your intelligence enough to think you know the answer.

In this case, he wrote a changeling at the wedding, which means he was invited or at least let in. He was even undisguised around 3 Alicorns and clearly noticed by everyone, I won't go further but you get it. This is not speculating without evidence, it's called following a line of reasoning and logic. It is a fundamental technique in understanding an author's meaning when interpreting their writing. It could be meaningless, or it could be setting up for something, we don't have all the pieces yet. Hence, when you say something like.

it had no relevance whatsoever. There's nothing to it at all.

I say you can't possibly know that. Have you seen the future, do you know what season 6 holds, are you in the writers head. No, none of us are? :ajsleepy: That's why the only thing we can do short of asking them personally, is speculate. People just can't help but imagine up answers and possibilities. It makes us writers, artists, inventors and creators.

3147478 Funny you should say that, I read an article recently when they explained that Steven Moffet, showrunner of Doctor Who, was a very big fan of the Classic series when he was younger. He even wrote a few fan stories. Now guess what, in a way, it's his property while he's running it. :ajsmug:

Sorry, but I just don't see this one episode as spelling doom for the rest of the series.
As for Doctor Who, it's been renewed and there was an uptick in viewers near the end of the season so I don't think its ratings have been crushed just yet.

3146501 Of course the writers have no actual direction, no idea what do with the world they have, and no idea how to end it when the end finally comes. This was a show for little girls that was expected to bring in I think about 250 000 viewers an episode, and and end spectacularly with the main character becoming a princess in one last super-toy sales event. But then there were about another 100 000 viewers per episode bringing in loads of money, so the series was continued past its normal end date, and writers have no idea whether they should continue making a show for little girls and make it for grown men. This doesn't spell doom though, because slice-of-life shows are not and neither were about over-arching plots, in my opinion while a little continuity here and there adds to things, it's best to keep slice-of-life shows slice-of-life and leave consistent continuity to adventure shows.

How big of an 'I told you so' do you think is appropriate if the series does not die from this episode?(the definition of not-dying I'd say is having a 26 episode season 6).

I find it a bit funny how you said throughout the blog what is essentially 'screw fanboys', and nearly everyone else who has released a blog on the episode that I followed has said 'screw butthurt people'. It's the exact same mood, humor, and in some cases I think maybe even sentence structure

Do you think there's any chance you have a superiority complex in which you think your opinions are substantially greater than everyone elses', and you cannot accept ideas that go against your own?

Also, how did you having dinner with Lauren Faust come about?

You know what would have actually sucked? If they just played the most basic fanon stuff straight: Lyra & Bonbon are partners in bed, same with Octavia and Vinyl, Dr. Whooves actually is "Dr. Who in Equestria", Derpy eats muffi-- okay, that really did happen, but you get my point.

I look at it like I did at "Luna Eclipsed": the fans expected some sort of "emo Luna" or "cute Luna" or even "cute emo Luna", but instead we got THE ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE. The writers wanted to make a fanservice episode, but they didn't just stick every single BG pony in there and do the most obvious stuff possible. They simultaneously appealed to the fans' expectations and decided to do something different with them.

Just a few examples: Vinyl never speaks, she's not some dubstep fanatic, nor does she do drugs or act like some crazy bitch in general. The only "divide" between her and Octavia are the instruments and the style of music they play. Celestia and Luna argue with each other behind the scenes, but they do it like a pair of regular ponies, instead of either of them becoming parodies of themselves. Lyra and BonBon... I don't even need to describe that in detail, do I?

If they're really going to pander, then I say it should be over-the-top. I'm only annoyed by pandering once it starts to barge into the episodes with more interesting and important plots (since this one is clearly not meant to be taken seriously).

I see you voicing the unpopular opinion here. I wouldn't normally get involved for sanity reasons, but I have to point out that I'm fairly certain far more people enjoyed it than didn't. The problem brought up here is that people need to avoid fanon when working with something official. Normally this is true for many reasons, but this case is different in the sense that this episode was essentially a thank-you card to us. We've made them feel like a part of something bigger than they've likely ever experienced, and they thank us in the way they know best. Yes, the BonBon secret agent part was weird, but hell, does it matter? Look deeper into it, it creates interesting questions, just as everything did in this episode. Canterlot has a secret agency, not all changelings are hive-mind, the BugBear did something in the past, and Gummy has been observing all of Ponyville this whole time. Have some fun, and stop looking to break the episode down because people didn't agree with certain fanon ideas, no one is going to agree on everything all the time, ever. It was fun and harmless, and as for no show ever doing this before, well I'm glad to be a fan of the one that said "Let's try this and see what happens". If the show ends, it ends and we go on with our lives, this fading to a memory, but if anything, I feel like this renewed the bond between the staff and the fans. Some will leave nonetheless, like when Twilight became a princess, but most of us will stay anyway because we appreciate knowing that they appreciate us too.

Oh yes, other major positive thing: Button Mash only has a cameo. The little bastard never actually does anything, nor is he shipped with anyone.

3148029 :ajbemused:

Lauren had a story bible and general world rules and major relationships set out when she pitched the show.

Any head writer worth his or her salt has a core continuity in place for a series that's going to have an ongoing continuous narrative.

Even shows like "Adventure Time" and "Regular Show" have a set of plot points and continuity which they maintain. Heck, even old shows like "The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin" had a long-term storyline planned out from the beginning.

A well-written show remembers its details and plans for upcoming events.

3148154

not all changelings are hive-mind

And you get that from a changeling just sitting there looking around. You see, this is yet another example of fans drawing conclusions with NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER.

Did it ever occur to you that the changeling may have been there for no reason other than a cameo because changelings are fan favorites?

This is why I make light of fanon: it assumes to much from too little, and more often than not ends up in opposition to official canon.

I also suspect we'll never hear of Canterlot's secret agency again. That was taken from several fanfics in which there was a secret monster-battling agency and Bon-Bon/Sweetie Drops and/or Lyra was a secret agent or had some other dark past.

The notion doesn't fit into the canon world and was merely a toss-away nod to that particular fanon trope.

3147685 The uptick in Doctor Who viewership was due to the finale generating interest. In general, the season finales had been something special.. though the previous one with The Silence and Trenzalore was rather lackluster, especially considering the delightful 50th anniversary special. It was as though they forgot they had to write a finale while they were doing the 50th and then were like, "Oh shit! We need to close this out!" and got George Lucas to throw something together.

And from my analysis of fan reviews of the season's finale... more than half didn't like what they did with it, and pointed out all the same plot problems I found... including a few I'd missed in the second part because it was just too annoying.

3147574 No it is NOT logic and reasoning!

You arrive at this conclusion by IGNORING and DISMISSING all other possibilities! Including that the only reason it was there was to have a changeling show up for the fans. There is also the possibility it's braindamaged, or didn't realize it had lost its cover... the possibilities are endless BECAUSE WE HAVE NO INFORMATION!!

You CANNOT arrive at a logical conclusion with the changeling because we know NOTHING concrete relating to its presence.

Logic, in this situation, suggests no conclusion can be ascertained.

3150624 No, what I did was choose one possibility then run down it's line of reasoning, you could do the exact same thing with each and every other possibility. Suppose it did lose it's cover, the fact that it was still there means something. And even so, we do have information. The simple fact that it was there and not told to leave acts as a ground point. But regardless of either of those things, you have proven my point.

it had no relevance whatsoever. There's nothing to it at all.

How can you come to a definite statement like that when A) You just said with no information we can't do that, and B) Like I said, the season has no yet ended so the puzzle isn't finished.

Did it ever occur to you that the changeling may have been there for no reason other than a cameo because changelings are fan favorites?

That is a posibility you have chosen to follow. Please know, I'm not arguing that it's not possible, I'm debating that there are other possibilities, and not to shut them out.

Potential. That's the only thing we can say right now. The changeling appearance... has... potential, and any writer worth their salt can see that. Whether or not it is ever used, remains to be seen.

But onto other news.

I also suspect we'll never hear of Canterlot's secret agency again.

Even if we don't you gotta admit, that little tid-bit adds to the building of the Canterlot history. :scootangel: Have you seen the monsters that've shown up in this story? It's not that far fetched.

3150682 The changeling appearance has potential for fan explanations of every sort, but that doesn't mean that in the episode itself it had any purpose other than a fan service cameo. It could have had a purpose or none at all... that's a rather wide range!

Heck, one could even legitimately write a fic where the troll god Larsonus plucked him out of the hive and dropped him in the back of the wedding just before the scene switched to him and he's wondering what the buck just happened.

We simply don't have any meaningful facts, therefore we can draw no definite conclusion.

3150612

Well, it's been renewed until 2020. More than enough time, I think, to undo any damage that was done during the previous season.

3150780 Exactly! We have no definite conclusions, therefore we speculate, we guess, we predict we follow possible routes of reasoning to come to a possible conclusion. It's what writers do, it's what scientists do. Untill we get an answer, everyone will have their own prediction. It's not wrong to have them. It's is wrong to say that we shouldn't or that having them is ridiculous.

It may not mean anything now but it has major potential for official work. If not in the show than in the comics. MLP may not have a set plan for the series entirety but there are advantages to being able to come up with new plots fresh each season. One advantage is by making use of previous episode elements without consequence on a whole scale. Perfect example: Tirek escaped when Cerberus left Tartarus back in season 2. You think they planned that. No they made use of it. Good stories are planned from start to finish. Great stories flow together naturally and evolve on their own.

3150815 Yeahhhhh, but basically this is Schrodinger's Changeling: he has all potential reasons for being there, including having no reason, until the show addresses him again... if that ever happens... which probably won't happen.... kinda like Fluttershy's fangs...

So every possibility could be equally wrong AND equally right until we have information.

Therefore, all speculation becomes invariably futile unless you're writing a fanfic.

3150824 Oh yeah... I had hopes for that gag. You know what? I still do. But in any case, I don't think you know what the word invariably means, good sir. If it has absolutely any chance of being right over being wrong, it's not invariably anything. In fact just pointing this out

So every possibility could be equally wrong AND equally right until we have information.

Which I agree with, means that neither of us can use any definite terms.

You can never say that it's fruitless effort until the show ends or we get an answer from Larson. Then, and only then, can you say that coming up with them is futile. In tropes, it's called Chekhovs Gun, the rule of writing that states each and everything in a story has a purpose towards the narrative. It remains in this state until the show ends or it's openly dismissed, where it falls under the trope of Chekhovs Gag an underutilized or unfinished element. Fluttershy Fang, as confirmed by a writer was an ending gag like the shadow mare

3150579 It isn't able to plan for upcoming events though because the main overarching plot points have already mostly been used up. Like I said before, I speculate that it was original intended to end after season 3(more specifically Equestria Girls).

But seriously, how did you have dinner with Lauren Faust? Do you live in the same town or something? You can't just name drop like that without giving a little evidence.

3150600 I'll drop the whole secret agency thing because I don't particularly care as much about that one, but let's take a closer look at the changeling in the crowd. It actually DOES follow a very solid line of logic that Cranky befriended the changeling while on his search for Matilda, despite what you said earlier about it not having any logic at all. In "A Friend in Deed", we clearly saw that he traveled all across Equestria looking for her, and would have likely met many characters on his way. This would explain why Steven Magnet was his "Best Beast" at his wedding. We know that the Mane 6 met Steven only because they went into the Everfree. While that doesn't mean much, it means that he likely would have been out of the way of most ponies. Now Cranky isn't stupid, just stubborn, so he likely knew who it was okay to be friends with while on his travels (despite the show saying that he didn't want friends). Steven was a reasonable pick to be a friend, if a drama queen. He wouldn't have been friends with a changeling that had ill-intent, and I don't see Matilda in a situation in which she would meet a changeling. This stands to the logic that the changeling was invited to the wedding, and not just a fan-pander. Yes, this is all speculation on my part, but it's speculation with reasoning and evidence.

3151010 You see, perfect example of the act of choosing a possibility and following it's line of reasoning.

3150920
I don't think we'd have gotten this far if they weren't planning a bit in advance.

3151073 Sure they plan some in advance. They absolutely plan individual seasons out. But as a whole, the only arc that I can think of that really continued over at least three episodes in multiple seasons is Discord's reformation process.

3151061 That's just it. It's a POSSIBILITY. But, since there is IN ACTUALITY no information at all pertaining to the changeling, we CANNOT state anything factual about its presence, other than the obvious facts that it was there are the ponies nearby were frightened of it.

The POSSIBILITIES therefore remain mere headcanon until such time as the show (if ever, which I doubt) revisits this lone changeling and gives him a reason for being there.

The LOGIC of the headcanon only exists upon finding factual evidence to back it up. Beyond that, it's pure speculation. And even the most rational speculation is, at best, an educated guess which may end up completely wrong.

Having now watched it again and sorted out the good and bad aspects... I have thought of the two easy ways this episode could have been made for everyone, rabid fanfic writers, shippers of everything, and even regular fans who think all the rest are insane and obsessed over little cartoon ponies.

Immediately after the wedding, it flashes to Derpy/Muffins in the post office explaining that this is why she was late for work. Her boss declares its the most ridiculous explanation he's ever heard... then the Mane 6 drag the tied up, knocked out Bugbear by... and we're left wondering just how much was actually real and what, if anything, Derpy made up/exaggerated.

Bon-Bon/Sweetie Drops being a secret agent would have been precisely the sort of thing Derpy might have simply made up on the spur of the moment.

OR, alternatively, the manic portions of pure fanon would perfectly represent something the CMCs might have made up if they used this convoluted wedding story to explain to Cheerilee why they were late with an assignment (to which Cheerille could've simply replied, "Girls... I was at the wedding too, you know." to which they would hang their heads and collectively sigh, "Oh, yeah..." and end with that, leaving everything deliciously coy and ambiguous. I appreciate that level of cleverness in writing, you must realize by now.

Either ending allows people have their fanon ideas, but also leaves an out for the show canon that much of it may have just been in Derpy's or the CMCs' heads.

Problem solved in 10 seconds flat. Either scene could've easily fit into 10 seconds or less. And it would only require shortening a few scenes that dragged on a bit further than the joke was good for: such as Doctor Whooves and Vinyl/Octavia's crazy buildup.

Does MLP:FiM still meet its original design goals?
Is the show still targeting its primary demographic?

3226372 Given the ratings lately... I'd say the original demographic is now more interested in "Equestria Girls".

I'm trying to warn everyone to not keep pushing for fanon nonsense. It's a bad idea. Pandering is something very few shows have ever done successfully when they've attempted it. Most shows never do because the writers know better. Strong writing in a show with any set continuity must be sacrosanct; above all it must remain true to itself.

3150920 Oh, as to my having dinner with Lauren, John de Lancie, and Tara Strong.
