A Gift for Poultron · 1:21am Jul 23rd, 2012
Someone pointed out to me a while ago that FiMfiction Mod Poultron has said some very flattering, but almost certainly inaccurate things about my story, Ponies Play D&D. He and I actually chatted in the Google Docs chat bar back when I posted the very first act of Part 2, before FiMfiction even existed and the fandom was young and... well, mostly just young. He said some very nice things to me at the time as well, and his encouragement is part of the reason I could summon up the confidence to finish writing the thing in the first place, so I feel like I owe him a lot.
I've thought long and hard about the best way to thank him, and settled on this simple, visual tribute:
Anyway, thanks, buddy. That'll teach ya to compliment me!

Straight from the heart.
Hahaha, i wish I could favorite a blog post. I had no idea you would even remember so far back! Those were good times, man.
I could say a lot more flattering things about Ponies Play D&D. It's honestly still one of my favorite fics to read. It has the distinctive feel of an early fandom fic, well before the entire tone of the fandom changed completely. The characterization is absolutely sublime, never missing a beat, and I could quite easily see this sort of thing get animated. In fact, it's almost a classic cartoon plot. It's the absolutely perfect setup for a character-driven show like FiM, and it works out wonderfully.
I still haven't read Part 3 yet though, I keep meaning to. The little Favorites number has been bugging me forever.

How did the tone of the fandom change? I wasn't here for that.
Also, I want a unicron. Sounds very high-tech.
Poultron's right about the characterization. It's a great concept - each pony reveals their character by failing at DMing in a distinctive way.

In the old days, the fandom had a kind of loose, I-can't-believe-we're-actually-watching-a-show-about-ponies feel to it, and we didn't take ourselves or anything we did that seriously. These days, ponies are often such Serious Business. Poultron might be referring to that.
Of course, the community has changed in some good ways, too. I think we've become much less crass and alienating to outsiders since we left 4chan behind, so that's a good thing. I think fandoms mature like cheeses- getting increasingly funky, but more interesting to the discerning palette. Or something. I don't know.
man holy shit it's been 10 years since i saw this and i didn't even remember it
this is still so fuckin awesome and i still love ponies play D&D you rock
