    A sad tale

    So I posted that one crappy random story which I originally wrote in like 30 minutes, got a bunch of negative feedback from a bunch of trolls, many of which didn't even bother commenting, and one guy who actually read it and saw that there was actually maybe possibly theoretically some potential there, and one guy who liked it for no reason whatsoever. Thank you random guy. You da real mvp.

It's been a considerable length of time, and a lot of stuff has happened since then.

I have other stories on the backburner here, and I'm not sure if I'm going to finish them.
Partially because of the trolls, but really that's only a small bit of it.
The main thing is what most authors have issues with, motivation to write.
However, I've been gaining momentum lately.

That random story was written first on google docs, then moved to fimfiction, then moved back to google docs, expanded considerably, then moved to dropbox.

I moved it to dropbox because even the superior formatting of google docs was insufficient for my needs.

The raw, unadulterated power of HTML and CSS have given me what I needed. First of all, bright text on a dark background is much easier on my eyes, and I can ensure that all the colors and everything still work because no colors are stored in any chapter, but in central CSS files. I have tested it in any web browser I could get my hands on, from IE to Opera to whatever my dumbphone uses. It works everywhere, whereas trying to get fimfiction to load on my phone is utterly hopeless.

Anyways, so here's the problem.

For me, writing the stories on fimfiction has been a bit of a hassle, and draining.
For me, writing the stories in html has been amazing, fun, and invigorating, and can even be excused as practice for work.

Which means that all of the writing that I've done any time recently has been in Notepad++, where I cannot gain notoriety as readily as fimfiction.

I will probably post one or two stories on here, don't know when, but I guess for the most part, I'll just be writing off on my own.

... I wonder what sort of interesting stunts I can pull off with Javascript...

Alright, whatever you feel comfortable doing. :twilightsmile:

As much as I love me some HTML and CSS... I don't see why that has anything to do with your writing? Writing should be entirely agnostic of the tool used to do it.

Personally, I used to write everything in Notepad++ and then copy and paste it into Fimfiction (and fix any styling errors once it's there). And since I moved to Linux, I do the same thing in gedit (which is more or less the same as Notepad++). I never write anything in a browser if I can avoid it, because browsers can fail easily and the safety of your work isn't guaranteed. With an external text editor, you can save your work as often as you want and you'll always have a copy of it to rely on.

What are you writing that requires so much styling that you need to use HTML/CSS?

Among other things, I like to convey talking quickly with text whose characters are spaced closer together. Unless there's a hidden bracket tag on fimfiction, there is no way to do it here. In CSS, it looks like this.

.thin {
letter-spacing: -0.07em;
}

Also, there is no super or subtext, which I have used once, but will probably use again.

Like I said, either here or in this blog post, I color each character's lines and thoughtspeak. Not really necessary, I know, I could english it out, which would be more colorblindess-friendly, but I prefer expressiveness over boilerplate.

It's one way to interpret "show, don't tell".

No, I don't know why it affects my writing. It just does. In case you somehow hadn't noticed, I'm a little weird. Or crazy. Or both.
