[Show Spoilers!] Farewell, Sweet Headcanon · 5:32pm May 16th, 2015
I knew this was gonna happen. I knew it; I saw it coming as soon as I learned of the episode title. DIscord, that loveable tyrant, is back with more shenanigans and hijinks to entertain us with (and annoy the characters, as well!). So where does that leave poor, defenseless Humility?
Dead.
Gone.
Cast aside.
GOODBYE, CRUEL HEADCANON. YOU HAVE BEEN REPLACED.
*Cough*
Nah but seriously, I knew an episode was fast approaching that would stick a wooden stake in my carefully-constructed fic and leave it to twitch. But in all honesty, I'm not too terribly broken-up about it. I mean, really, how can I blame the show? Discord, as manic as he is, remains a fan-favorite character, and I welcome any opportunity for the show's animators to go off-the-wall with their visual gags. Today's episode was no different, and despite how it plants Humility firmly in the Alternate Universe (HA I KNEW I WOULD NEED IT), I find myself perfectly okay with how things have come to be.
Why? Simple, really. Discord remains my favorite villain-not-villain, simply because he's so different from anything else we'll ever see. Any new potential I can draw from his portrayal in the series is good. Why should I be upset about that? While it's true that Humility is now relying on a one-shot exploration instead of a series-wide concept, that was the entire point of the fic anyway. An exploration into that "what if" territory; placing a character into a situation and seeing how he responds.
So, yes. I have much fewer resources to call upon when I write Humility, yet that was true long ago anyway, so there's no real loss. In the end, what has changed?
Well, we got TONS more shipping fodder all across the spectrum.
Continuity with the show. The Grand Galloping Gala has returned once more. (Though I wonder if this is the second one or the third, because in Sweet and Elite, Twilight mentions the Gala coming up soon, but that was season two, and we saw neither hide nor hair of it until today, so that could mean that the frilly fillies missed an invite between season one and season five, or the passage of time is in MAJOR flux for the world, because come on just three weeks ago it was the start of winter, and it looked like springtime today, which makes sense for how much Fluttershy wanted to see the flora in her daydream during episode one-oh-three, and I'm getting off track, but my question about the passage of time still stands, because seriously this is a major thing that's a thing and it won't go away, because somebody out there has read this rant all the way through, and that person deserves a muffin baked by Sugar Belle because she's cute, but not when she got her cutie mark back; in fact I think she was cuter while she was being repressed by equality because straight hair is just adorable on ponies, which I think is why so many people like Twilight Purplesmart and wet manes in general, though speaking of wet manes, did anyone else notice in Apploosa's Most Wanted that Applejack's hat got waterlogged from the rain, but nobody else's hat did?)
Oh, and continuity with the comics, also. Well, not necessarily with Tree Hugger, but with hippie ponies druggies animals loving animals NATURE ENTHUSIASTS in general.
Also a Maud Pie cameo. No, really, I was only able to tolerate Pinkie Pie due to Maud's presence there. It was therapeutic. (Yeah I've decided I really don't care for Pinkie's over-the-top antics as much as I did in season one. SHUT UP, PINKIE PIE.)
*Ahem*
But as for the story? Ehhhhhhh, it was based on an idea anyway, and the idea hasn't changed. So Humility will remain as it is now.
...
How many of you just said "unfinished"? I KNOW I HEARD SOMEONE SAY THAT!
