For each of the pairings, I'll be doing a blog giving details on them. All this information is available here, with the full list of character bios. As well, I'll put a link directly to their fights and voting doc. Every Saturday, I'll post another one with a new pairing.
And now for my personal favorite battlefield. Griffon pride vs. unicorn anger. Let's get to it.

Battlefield: The Maple Mires
This battlefield was once a verdant forest, but has since been soaked and saturated in sickly-sweet and super sticky syrup. As a result, it has slowly corroded into a marshland, soft, spongy ground breaking up streams of syrup. The trees have gallons of the sweet liquid running through them, pouring through the chipping bark, and soaking the ground below. Even the leaves drip syrup, forming sticky webs of gelatinous amber goo. Windy storms are unfortunately common, blowing through the trees and slinging strands of binding syrup all over. Unwary creatures can quickly find themselves forever trapped, bound and stuck in place by the sticky morass. Even brushing against a tree can be dangerous, although there are clear paths throughout for those with a careful eye and steady hoof. Some areas have also dried out, the trees long since dead and decaying. The syrup here is typically rock hard, even forming deadly spikes of hardened sugar. In other places, it has crumbled to dust the consistency of quicksand.
Arcanum
Race: Unicorn Pony
Description: An older unicorn, Arcanum has a pale periwinkle coat and a dark brown mane that is beginning to grey. His amber eyes match his magic colour, and his left eye is blinded from an old injury which has left three scars. His cutie mark is a starburst bound in a chain.
Origin: Far Past, Post-Nightmare
Capabilities: Arcanum is a master magician, having honed his magical spells to their maximum. His specialty are spells designed to hinder and disable his opponents, backed by crafty and wicked illusions. Along with this is his cunning intelligence, which he often uses to corral his enemy into traps or other field hazards.
Bio: During the height of the Royal Pony Sisters’ initial rule, Arcanum was one of their most respected magical advisors. Over time, Arcanum grew attached to the Princess of the Night. When she began her terrible fall and became Nightmare Moon, Arcanum was one of only a handful who knew the truth of her pain. After her sealing in the moon, Arcanum grew to resent, and eventually hate, Celestia for her cruel punishment of her sister. He left Canterlot, wandering, searching for a way to save Luna. But as the years passed and his quest proved ever more futile, his goal changed. No longer content to just save Luna, he sought the ending of Celestia above all things.
Motivation: Arcanum seeks one thing and one thing only: the complete destruction of Princess Celestia. Being that Discord is a natural enemy to the sun princess, this tournament seems to be the answer to his dreams of vengeance. Nopony could possibly be more motivated than he.
Rocky
Race: Griffon
Description: Like most griffons, Rocky’s eyes are a piercing gold. He has a black beak and pale brown feathers, while his ‘lion’ torso is a golden brown.
Origin: Modern Day
Capabilities: Being an enthusiastic sports player, Rocky is very fit, even for a griffon. He also has some martial arts experience, though he’s neglected his training and has become a bit rusty. Still, griffons are natural fighters and Rocky has continued to push himself in both physical and mental extremes.
Bio: Born to a competitive family, Rocky found himself challenged and fighting for supremacy from a young age. However, being the youngest in his family, he often felt overshadowed, paling in his siblings’ accomplishments. Despite being constantly overlooked by his family, this only pushed him harder and harder, desperate for the spotlight he knew belonged to him.
Motivation: Rocky is an incredibly driven griffon, even amongst his own kind. His ultimate goal is to find and overcome the ultimate challenge, surpassing all others and reaching a sort of immortality. Forever remembered, universally known and beloved. Never, ever forgotten. Discord is such a being, and it is because of this that Rocky hopes he may yet achieve his everlasting fame.
