Miss Koi Reviews "Bloom and Gloom"...with pancakes;) Another new theme to this season...Pancakes;) · 5:33pm Apr 18th, 2015

To be honest, when I first read the synopsis for this episode way back when it was first posted on Equestria Daily, I wasn't too excited for this episode because it seemed like it was only be an episode repeating Apple Bloom's first episode in the series. Her worrying about her cutie mark and thus doing everything in her power to get one. However, seeing the first sneak peek this week of the episode helped changed that. To my surprise, this episode was going to be about Apple Bloom worrying about the consequences of getting her cutie mark and how her life will change.
In a way, this episode fits into what Starlight Glimmer was talking about in the season premier. Cutie marks only cause worry and distress. With different cutie marks, you don't see eye to eye. There will always be competition and friendships fall apart. It's like this episode was responding to Starlight's philosophy but now using the CMC to tackle the issue. And the episode tackles the issue well by having the moral to be about don't be afraid of who you are and you will become. Ignoring or denying your cutie mark is liking denying who you are and being afraid of yourself. The person...err pony...that you are may not be perfect, but like Luna said, it will fit you to a tee. It will be wonderful because it's your identity and yours alone.
Even though Apple Bloom kinda stated a different moral at the end of the episode, regardless, I believe that moral I stated was the true moral of the episode. It just fits in with the whole cutie mark theme/message of this season better than Apple Bloom's moral, in my opinion. So in other words, the moral was the best part of the episode in my eyes because it was such a deep and complex moral that it very much relevant to our modern day society. It's a moral that's surprisingly not talked about often.
Before I talk about the rest of the episode...let me just say...Babs Seed got her cutie mark!:derpyderp2: I honestly wasn't expecting that, and I think none of us did. And I certainly wasn't expecting her cutie mark to be in cutting hairstyles. I was expecting it to be something a little more different, but it still works for me.:raritywink: Yay they're going to send her a care package and still going to be friends with her:heart: Also, DAWWW on Applejack's lullaby for Apple Bloom:rainbowkiss: AJ/Apple Bloom sister fans are going to eat up that scene like candy.:twilightsheepish:
If you guys thought last season's "For Whom The Sweetie Belle Tolls" was an episode filled with Nightmare Fuel, oh boy:rainbowderp: This episode tops that, along with some "Inception" technique too:twilightoops: I think the most interesting part of this episode was the creepy voice that kept popping up. At first, I thought it was Starlight Glimmer. But then I was like...NAH! It couldn't be...could it? Then, I thought it was Luna but it didn't sound like her. I was surprised to find out that it was Apple Bloom's own shadow, her fears basically. Which was a nice touch by the writers in order to bring the moral home.
I think most of us weren't surprised when Luna showed up. It's been our wish/theory since the beginning of the S5 hiatus to have an episode like this. Sure enough, the writers did it. I think Luna's entrance into Apple Bloom's dream was so Gorgeous :raritystarry: I was also not surprised to have a CMC episode as our fourth episode because eventually they were going to show up. And this is the season to do it. I mean, it's about cutie marks for Celestia's sake! I have a feeling that this is the season....the season where the CMC finally get their cutie marks:pinkiehappy: Yes, it's going to come. I just know it. Again, this season is about cutie marks! They have to do it or else it would be a crime against the show!
Overall, I give this episode a 7.5 hearts out of 10. :heart:Yay! Hmmmm, I'm sensing a tread here with my grading:applejackunsure: I'm sure that the next episodes will have a different grade soon. Right?
What did you guys think of the episode? Leave me a comment down below and let's start a discussion.

I really liked the episode. I already posted my review, but i kind of had similiar feelings to what you were saying :)

I did, and commented on your blog about that same topic:raritywink: Any writing challenges for me this time?

My sister and I did notice that pancakes have been appearing twice in a row. What in the world have they got to do with cutie marks?
I'm not really keen on the next two episodes, but I think the Discord episode will receive a higher score than what I've been giving so far. :raritywink:
