tLoE VI: Tech Ponies use (part 1). · 11:07am Apr 17th, 2015
Hello, and welcome back to the land of Equestria! It's been a while, so this week we'll start covering a very intriguing topic, and one that is very near and dear to my heart...this Week's post is on Equestrian Technology! Now, throughout the show, we've seen everything from Rustic farms to modern Hospital equipment, modern looking cities to rural villages (looking at you Ponyville). So, it's actually a bit difficult to get an overall read on their technological development, and because of this, we'll break it down into a few sections.
Let's start off with general technology in Equestria, which, all things considered, is not too developed. It's understandable...Magic has a heavy prevalence throughout the land, so it renders some fields rather pointless. It's also worth noting that there are certain developments that ponies never needed to look into too extensively, like flying machines. They only really needed lighter than air craft for non-Pegasi, as it has little use given that an entire race can already do arial tasks, but that's just an example. Looking at the overall, we outrank them technologically, but a few specific fields should be examined to get a better perspective.
Here's a familiar one: Transportation! As I pointed out some time ago, Equestrians are quite fond of trains, so it's no surprise that they've mastered Steam locomotives. However, almost every other form of ground transportation has been entirely pony-driven. From carriages to rickshaws (the Taxis), the only motorized transportation shown has been Flim and Flam's Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000, and even that resembled a trackless train. As for arial transports, They rely on airships and hot air balloons mostly, although it has been shown that Equestrians have developed helicopters (Testing Testing 1,2,3 ). So, when it comes to transportation, The Equestrians are around late Victorian age, the helicopter perhaps a few decades beyond that.
But how about an entirely different field, Medicine. Unlike their transportation, Equestrian Medical technology seems to be just behind ours, as they are capable of taking X-Rays, Properly treating most illnesses, and Developing heart monitors. The hospital beds seen in "Read it and weep" Seem relatively modern, although hospital beds, heart monitors, X-ray and general medicine have been around for the majority of the 20th century on Earth. In the episode "Secret of my Excess", Spike was taken to a veterinarian's office, which seemed just as advanced as the Hospital. Therefore, I rate Equestria's medical technology at an equivalent to Earth's late 20th Century, Early 21st Century (between the 1980s and the 2000s).
So, how about a field that's not so advanced? More specifically, Communications. The Majority of Equestria seems to send letters and packages as the primary form of communication, and even though they are capable of Moving pictures (The presentation in "Hurricane Fluttershy" and, better yet, The movie theatre in "One bad apple" ), They don't seem to be able to broadcast them in any way. In fact, no form of electronic communications has been seen, save for phones (albeit simple phones), so that limits them even more. However, they are very efficient with their Letter/package system, Having an official Postal service (probably another service provided by the Central Equestrian Government), and in a world where some people can easily teleport messages, or even themselves, it's no mystery why communications technology is so much less than ours. So, due to the existence of Phones and the organized postal service, I'm putting Communications tech at late Victorian age to Early 20th Century (between 1880 and 1920,[ only about two decades after the Victorian age ended]).
And there's more...Plenty more. So much more tech that I can't cover it all in just one post...that's right, it's a two-parter!
And that was a long one! So, here's your tldr list!
-Their Tech's a bit low compared to Us.
-Magic is a big factor, therefore less need for tech
-Their Transportation is about late 19th Century equivalent.
-Medicine is around late 20th-early 21st Century Equivalent
-Communications is relatively equal to Late 19th Century methods
-it's a two parter! (Insert Back to the Future theme here ).
So, for more Advancement info, come on back next week, and as always, keep on doing what you do best!
