Writing for the Approval of Strangers Online · 5:18am Apr 15th, 2015
As I was hanging out with some friends earlier today, one of them began listing the people we knew that he actually liked. When he got to me he said that was actually "acceptable" and it honestly made me feel good. As a joke I replied, "That's all I've ever wanted in life, to be acceptable by others." They just laughed at that, but honestly, while my tone and delivery was a joking one I seriously meant it. But, is that strange? Is it strange for someone to go through their entire life just living to be accepted by others? I believe that may be the reason why I've taken so much time for the rewrite of my story and why I deeply value and desperately seek out the feedback and criticism of others, that all I want is to make something acceptable by others.
Sure, I want to entertain and write for fun as well, as someone has told me that I should write for myself and not for others, but I want to show people that I am capable and competent, because I know I am and that I can be. I want people to be pleased with my work. I want to share my creativity, whether or not I have a little or a lot of originality, and I know for a fact that I have little. Whether this is healthy or not, it is what keeps me going more or less. But my question for you would be, do you understand where I'm coming from, what I mean by all this? Because from my observation and very short limited experience, it seem like something we all do whether we are aware of it or not.
It's good to try and entertain and/or teach others through your art of choice be it writing, gaming, videos, etc. However, you cannot please everyone. It is literally impossible. Don't live your life trying to change the way you do things so that every single reader of yours is happy, but take what you want out of what they say into account.
Live to make others happy if you wish, but don't try to please everyone. It's not healthy at all.
2985984 Oh yeah, I know you can't please everyone, but I would at least like a majority lol. I can settle for that. At the time of writing this my story now has 10 likes to 6 dislikes. That puts me in the green, but not by much. I can see there is a lot more work I need to do, however, considering the topic and general content of that story, it is bound and destined to have a rating more or less like that forever, even if it were 100 to 60. Even if it is good that doesn't mean everyone will like it, and I'm okay with that. I'll just have to take a crack at another story and expand my palette.
But that brings me to another interesting concept. If you do not like a story and therefore do not hit the like button, what do you do? You don't like it so you don't click the like button, and you don't dislike it, so you wouldn't hit the dislike button, which means that logically you would just leave it neutral. Right? Well, I wonder how many people click dislike for something they generally just don't like. And this isn't about my story, I'm talking about other good stories I've seen. I wonder if there is any scientific or psychological information on this. I'm sure I'm not the first person to ask this question or think of this, lol.
So for my long winded posts and replies
2986012 Long winded is fine lol
As for what you mean by "that type of story" being a DBZ crossover, I disagree. I am still in the process of writing my own DBZ crossover and the like/dislike ratio is 107/8. Content doesn't matter as long as it's presented in a way that entices the readers :)
As for neutrality, if I read a story I do not like, but do not hate (as in I just don't care enough about the characters involved or something minor like that) I leave it as is and leave the buttons alone. I only ever dislike if a story is absolutely horrific and makes no sense (if it's attempting to anyway). lol
2986023 I see. Well, I'm more of an artist with my hands rather than my mind, and what I mean by that is I'm better at drawing something than writing and trying to describe or tell it. I want to animate, it's more natural to me, because instead of "show, don't tell" (which I have so much trouble understanding and hate lol) I can literally show someone something... Because I will have drawn it rather than written it.
But... Because I'm so lazy and animating takes lots of time and hard work, writing is pretty much the lowest rung on the ladder of effort for me, lol. And besides, I may get around to animating any idea I write down so in a way I might as well be recording an idea for future reference by writing (not Fluttersaiyan of course, lol, I'd love to animate it, but I could never gather the resources).
Also, I gotta check out that story of yours...
2986075 Haha you'll need lots of time for my story, but I'd appreciate it :)
If you wanna animate, you could always use Gmod to get some 3D animating practice. I made my profile pic in Gmod and have several YouTube vids of my own animations. It's still time consuming, but not nearly as much as starting from scratch XD
Indeed, writing is much more difficult than it looks; showing don't tell is a bit confusing, but here's how I see it:
Telling: "Goku charged up a Kamehameha and shot it at [insert villain name here]"
Showing:" Goku took up a stance; his legs spacing out as he twisted his torso to the side and placed his hands together in a cup-like motion. As he charged the signature attack of his family, the energy appeared in his palms as if he was holding a glowing ball. His eyes focused like scopes on his adversary and he thrust his palms forward with a mighty yell; the beam of blue ki blasting forth like a runaway freight train."
Now others might have a different comparison as to that rule, but that's how I see it. Basically describe the scene that's playing in your head with colorful words and make like your watching the show so to speak :) I hope that helps a bit!
2986091 Ah yes, just read the first chapter of your story and it is very good, the characters feel very genuine, I can hear their voices! And I have noticed there are 61 chapters and still incomplete! Holy moly!
And for Gmod, I may be able to do that on my other computer. I'm learning 2D animation and prefer it, but I was very good with stop motion, and 3D animation is essentially virtual puppetry. But how about the newer SFM? How do the two compare, I wonder?
And finally for show don't tell, I think that is what I try to do, I just need a tiny bit more practice with imagery and all, lol. But otherwise that is about what I guessed it was, being very descriptive to "show" the scene. I remember when I first wrote I told everything lol, and I still tend to, but eventually I got a vague idea of what to do.
2986099 Oh yes, when I first started writing I told more than showed as well XD Once you get into the habit, it becomes natural though :)
Gmod vs SFM? I've seen amazing SFMs out there, but I prefer Gmod because it's simpler to use x3
As for my story, if you think that's long, wait till the two sequels come out along with the tie-ins ;3 XD I got a whole series planed out
2986099 Also thanks for the compliment x3 haha
