Would You Read a Work of Original Fiction If I Wrote It? · 4:19am Apr 8th, 2015
Dear FIMfictioneers, as any of you who enjoyed Obsolescence know, I've all but given up on fan fiction. However, if I were to write a work of original fiction with the same themes and ideas as Obsolescence, would anyone be interested in reading it? If so, would you be interested enough to pay a small fee per chapter (keep in mind, any chapters would be 30+ pages, single-spaced, in length) that could be as low as a dollar? I am attempting to launch my own Patreon account, but for any such endeavor to be successful it would need readers.
In terms of original fiction, what would you want to see from me, if anything?
$1 per 30ish pages is more than one typically pays for a novella, but yeah, it might be worth it.

What would make it worth it to you? What would you be willing to pay to read? The price is adjustable.
Well, you and I were discussing retro-futurism, maybe you could write a few stories set in a Diselpunk or Raygun Gthic or, dare I say, Steampunk. Sadly I myself cannot donate very much money, if any at all, as I'm in a bit of a financial squeeze. Maybe one day I can donate 10 or 20 dollars, but not right now. I'm sorry about that, but that's life I guess.

I very well could, but do you think it would be something you would want to read all the way to the end? Also, if you were able to pay for it, would you?
2959508 I'd read it all the way to the end, and I'd pay for it in a heartbeat if I could.

Thank you for saying so, that's very encouraging.
The typical novella runs 300 pages @ ~$14 USD. Assuming 30 pages per payment/chapter, it comes to just shy of 50 cents. Considering that you are marketing to a much smaller group, $1 a chapter sounds like a reasonable price that I would pay if I enjoy the story. Perhaps give the first 3-5 chapters out free? Kinda like a drug dealer, give em a taste and if they want it, they will pay... the only issue I could see is that so far your market lacks demand and your product lacks visibility. Another reason to give out the pilot chapters free is so that people don't feel like they are risking money on something they aren't going to like. Consumers can be skittish.

Posting a few initial chapters for free sounds like an excellent idea.
If I were to write this story, I would plan for it to be rather lengthy, so perhaps longer than a novella. Unless, that is, you think a novella would be a more interesting or otherwise better length?
Also, what specifically would you be looking for in this story? What would make it appeal to you?
2959649 Don't write to appeal to an individual. Write to appeal to your creativity and muse. If what you produce is good then people will buy it, and if its very good, they will tell others about it. Perhaps you could write the story in volumes? A series of novellas, that way when the first of the series is done, you could potentially put it up for official publication. Of course, there is the typical style of online writing that just renders 6 million word, 70 chapter epics. Perhaps, when you finish the volumes you could put them up for $15 each like a regular novella. (A technically discounted price but it is also the "completed" work rather than posted updates and is a good/cheaper way to get new readers caught up without making them shell out lots of money just to catch up as that too can be daunting.)

Also excellent ideas.
Additionally, I have already written 30+ pages on an original fiction project, although it is not based on the themes and ideas of Obsolescence, or even the genre of cyberpunk. Despite my ongoing continuation of this piece, I wasn't sure if it would appeal to people as well as other ideas of mine.
I suppose what I'm asking is, given the choice between the two, do you believe more people would be interested in a post-apocalyptic work of original fiction or an original cyberpunk piece? I have plenty of ideas for both potential stories. Both deal with characters that are neither human nor pony, though I hope they would still be interesting to my readers from this site (they aren't anthropomorphic animals, either). Both deal with advanced magical technology, dark themes, and attempts to portray a world that should be saccharine but has instead been twisted to be anything but.
2959749 They both sound interesting.

And by that I mean both... eventually.
I`m willing to read High fantasy Epics if thats ok

By High Fantasy, do you mean the sort of genre of Lord of the Rings? If so, I'm afraid that's not the genre I plan to write. Do you have any interest in post-apocalyptic or cyberpunk genres, specifically with magic involved?
2960664 sure I like the sound of that ^^
2959749 Either post apocalyptic or cyberpunk would be awesome, with or without magic. Combined would also be cool (Post apocalyptic cyberpunk). I'd certainly pay up front for a story, amount depending on length, but $1 for 30 pages doesn't sound too bad if those are short stories or per instalment. I really like the serialized format, which is probably why I've gotten into reading fanfiction. I'm always up for reading another 6 million word epic delivered in bite sized chunks.
