Changeling nutrition: are the "four loves" magic? · 5:38pm Mar 31st, 2015

Fact: changelings eat love. But what is love? Consider that English is a bit limited here. It uses "love" to describe what is actually a variety of sentiments. In Greek, on the other hoof hand, there are four kinds of love:

ἔρως (érōs) - romantic, sexual love
στοργή (storgē) - familial love
φιλία (philía) - love for one's friends
ἀγάπη (agápē) - selfless love, charity

In Equestria, as they say, friendship is magic. But consider this: since friendship (φιλία) is a form of love, could we not safely assume that all forms of love are magic?

Which would explain how Chrysalis defeated Celestia, a living god - she had been feeding from Shining Armor's love for Cadance. And it's also how the mutual love of those two, channeled into a spell, could beat Chrysalis and the whole changeling army in one swoop. Romantic love (ἔρως) is a very intense form of love; therefore, it is damn strong magic.

Now, it could be that changelings must obtain this emotional energy from ponies to survive – be it by deceit (pretending to be somepony else), by force (draining ponies of their love directly), or somehow actually winning a pony's affections. But the "feeding" part might be not literal. For example, in Interview With a Changeling, they survive eating regular food, but cannot generate magic from their own metabolism like regular pones; they need to take pones' love and convert it into magic that they can use.
