New Story Soon (Yay!) -- Heart of Chaos Chapter 1 Delayed (Boo!) · 5:49pm Jul 10th, 2012
Hello all! First off, thanks to you whom have chosen to watch me. I hope to not disappoint. Now, onto business.
So I started working on Chapter 1 and it's not going particularly well. Writing children is hard. I've just not been happy with what I've been putting down. But, slowly and surely, I suppose it's coming along. I won't have it done before vacation though. Still think it'll be up before the end of the month though, so that's good.
Actually, many thanks to DreamWings and his/her talent at writing from a child's perspective. That helped a whole whole lot. As well!--as well as giving me an idea for another shorter story that I think I can get out in a day or so. It's in the schedule and I'm working on it right now. I'm liking it a lot, heh, it's acceptably silly and yet totally plausible. So, a new story should be forthcoming from me very shortly. I hope you all enjoy it. Thanks again to DreamWings for allowing me to use the idea.
Um...business wise, that's all I've got. I'm having fun here, heh. I half feel like I must be getting on some peoples' nerves, but nobody's told me to shut up yet, sooooo....yeah, heh. Anyways, that's all from me. I'll be around if'n there's any questions, complaints, or just desires to chat (I'm decent at multitasking, so long as my ancient computer can handle it). Take it easy all! 'Til the next.
~----Schedule----~
~~To Be Released:
N/A
~~Workin' On It:
- (title forthcoming) .... A short story based upon the wonderful DreamWings' idea that Owlowiscious is really Star Swirl the Bearded.
- Heart of Chaos -- Chapter 1 .... A historical fiction/origin story for our favorite Princesses and bringer of Chaos ... Late July-Early August
~~On the Burner:
- Written Legacy (tentative title) .... A series of stories starring an OC/partial pony-sona concurrent with the TV series itself; initial inspiration--who was running the Ponyville library before Twilight showed up? ... Will begin sometime in early to mid July
~~Inception and Pre-Planning:
- A Daring Do adventure tale
~~On the Horizon:
- A Big Mac story (for SOMETHING. I have no idea. But I've been reading a few Adventure fics lately, and think I'd like to try my hand at something more traditional.)
- A VinylTavia ship/possibly origin tale (if I can think of something original since there are a lot of already excellent ones out there)
- A ship fic (failing the above VinylTavia one, or maybe included) (probably starring OCs, but my opinion on shipping canon cast characters may have changed by then)
- A crossover fic or two (most likely candidate is the Dresden Files (since I know that can work and I love that series almost as much as FiM), but I've been loosely thinking on a Mass Effect one as well)
- A true mystery fic (this may be unlikely. In the style of a Nero Wolfe novel, because it wasn't going to be hard enough as is.)
A good book to draw inspiration from regarding writing children is Cormac McCarthy's "The Road." The unnamed son in the story is simply wrote, (or is it written? Damn English language.) but I think that's what makes the character absolutely fantastic and real.
Another example for writing children is at the very opposite end of the spectrum: Calvin and Hobbs. I find that when I'm working on stories that have children in them, I try my best to channel Bill Watterson's snappy, innocent, and imaginative dialogue.
Though I'll have to take a look at Dreamwings' work and see how it is.

Y'know, that's a great suggestion. The Calvin and Hobbs bit. Well then. Cool, as they say, heh.
The only real example I ever had was a short story by Neil Gaiman that was written from a child's perspective. But it's narrative, and not dialogue. So not exactly the perfect choice to try and emulate. DreamWings' story actually reminded me a lot of that story--it's well written, but still sounds like a child (just a well-educated one). Has that sort of rambly, not-quite-focused sound to it. I was impressed, at any rate.
