Story Idea: Sunset Shimmer's Mother · 8:38pm Mar 7th, 2015
Sunset Shimmer's parents were so proud when Sunset was not only accepted into Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, but became Celestia's personal protégé. Of course, it was hard for them, being separated from their daughter while she was away at boarding school, but it just made the time they had together during school holidays all that much more precious.
Two and a half years later they were summoned to the school and given the news that Sunset Shimmer had left not only the school, but their entire universe. The news gave her father such a shock that it weakened his heart. Over the next few months, they heard half rumours from others at the school about what had happened between Sunset and Celestia, and why Sunset had felt she had to take such drastic measures.
Sunset's father never recovers his health, and after a few months dies. The funeral is small, and Sunset's mother is devastated that Sunset not only can't be there, but won't even know of her father's death. That day she vows that what happened to their family will never happen to other ponies. But she doesn't bear a grudge against Celestia — she knows that the root problem was Sunset's ambition, her desire to be special.
Oh yeah, and Sunset's mother's name is Starlight Glimmer.
