OCs for main characters · 5:54am Mar 5th, 2015
Am I the only one here that absolutely CAN NOT get into a story with an OC as it's main focus?
And then here I am trying to come up with ideas for a fic using one... What am I a hypocrite? No way, scrap that idea! I will not write a story with an OC for a main character. OCs are useful, but as main characters, they will always fall flat for me. Perhaps it's the lack of visual appeal? Who knows the reason, but OCs drive me mad. Especially male OCs. You just KNOW they're self inserts. Even when they're not, I still don't like them. An unconsious bias I can't shake, dispite really wanting to enjoy more fics.
I have the same problem with any fic trying to cross over MLP with another series. Another thing I also was trying to come up with ideas for doing such things. Fuck, this isn't going well.
I just need new ideas that satisfy my ideals for story writing, but also my ideals as a reader. If I wouldn't read it, I shouldn't write it, right? Well then why the hell am I thinking of these stupid ideas? Answer? Because I'm out of ideas.
I just need a really cool idea to spring into my mind. Something I could write about really fast and very well. An idea that wouldn't burn me out, or drive me away. Something easy to mold, yet still deep enough to adhear to my extreme standards.
Somber Tone was an attempt at being deep, but it was just a pile of trash, posing as a ship fic with a lame "twist" that never really got anything acomplished or resolved. Perhaps a "think about the ending for yourself" ending isn't what I need in my fic. I need facts. I am a logical being after all, dispite biology disagreeing with me from time to time.
but then, what ARE my standards, exactly?
Well, it's gotta be sad. If it doesn't make you have some serious feelz, I'm going to scrap it.
It's also gotta have few characters in it. I'm pretty bad at over saturating dialog to the point where that's all there is, so fewer character, fewer chances of me screwing up the flow with expository dialog and plot fluff.
Main character must be both female and a character from the show. I only say it must be female because there are more interesting females to choose from among the main cast. The only male character that recours is Spike, and he's boring as shit. I don't like anything about him really, so why would I write about him?
can't be a cross over, and romance elements must be kept to a scarce minimum. I don't like shipping all that much, (other than octixvinyl, obviously. Come on they're too perfect.) so that aspect is out. Crossovers typically are less pony and more other thing, requiring extensive knowledge of the other thing to get. Even the ones that don't require such knowledge have characters from that thing. Those characters will either not be a pony, or the will succum to ponism and thus act really differently and jaring. All in all, it's not going to turn out well unless you really trim it down to just ponies using the same concept as this other thing. I'm sure a few people have implemented such a system. I may give that a go if all else fails.
it must be at least ALMOST origial. SO MANY ideas I have stem from such trite and cliche stories. They'd never get accepted to EqD with such a lack luster effort put into how poor the idea is no matter how well it was exicuted. Though when you consider how fucking horrible Absolute Duo is, and how it STILL got an animated adaption, you wonder what they're doing to get absolute fucking shitty shit shit past these people. It's probably because soft core porn sells like fucking hot cakes. If it's not soft core porn, better not even fuckin touch it! that's japans thing, probably. It's why they sensor they're real porn. No it's not, but that'd be pretty funny if it was true.
anyway, standards = High || ideas = low
bad combo. time to sleep.
