I need your help (no seriously, I'm looking to you for advice) · 5:55am Feb 11th, 2015
So everybody remembers this post, right? Well, that's why I was unable to update last weekend. I got so into the story that I wrote for nearly two days without pause (except for mandatory bathroom and porn breaks) and got a good chunk of it done.
But why haven't you posted it you sorry sack of shit?! I hear you screaming at me in unholy rage. Well, first off, calm the fuck down. You're overreacting. And second, and most importantly... well... I accidentally damn near recreated the character from GMvE. I'm so used to writing dark, dry humor and a swear word in every other sentence that I forgot how to write light-hearted and not-curb-stomping-murder-time-fun-time things. Even in grade school I wrote very dark things and swore and included sex and gore in everything I wrote, from book reports to punishment writings I got from writing those book reports. I've always wrote like that, and now it's finally fucked me: I have absolutely no idea how to write something happy. I try, but it always comes out really shitty, or even sounding like a bad joke from MTV. I don't know how to write dialog without swearing or being sarcastic or angry. I don't know how to properly progress the characters without violence and punishment. And I only realized that after writing eleven God damned chapters that I now have to fucking scrap! I think my problem is that I write how I talk. Yes, if you read anything I've written (except maybe my shitty trial-and-error stories that I failed at) that is exactly how I speak in real life. I can't fix it. I've tried writing scrips for the dialog in stories, but it sounds dry and wooden. And of course, I believe that if the characters suck the whole story will most likely suck as well--you can take my GMvE stories as proof.
But enough babbling mindlessly. If you have any advice on how to write... "happy" or "light-hearted" or even something that isn't dark and angry, please, tell me. I'll take anything from helpful advice from you or somebody who knows what the hell they're doing, to fics that are calm and light, to anything else you might think could help me. This damn story's been burning a hole in the back of my skull for over a week now, and I'm even having dreams about it and how it could fuck up. I know some of you write, and you're very good at what you do. So if you read this and feel like helping just let me know what helps you keep your mind out of the gutter--actually, that goes for everybody. Tell me how not to be disgusting and sink into the pit of... stuff that makes people go down a dark road that they never come back from.
P.S. I wouldn't feel right without leaving you some nonsense that I find interesting. So, just a little fun fact. this is my ring tone. Every time somebody calls or texts me, or even does anything on facebook, that sound will play. It will play in diners, stores, the mall, book stores, somebody's bedroom, and really anywhere else that I bring my phone. I always laugh at the reaction it gets.
Somehow I can sleep through it perfectly though, even with it not five inches from my face.
Well this is kinda late reply but still, for me it works bes to look at some episode/part of it with that character in it and try to replicate the general attitude towards others, and if the character for which you wish to write is not in a such episode/video/whatever then ... well imagine you are in a room with an 8 year old and his parent with a shotgun; he doesn't want his kid to hear any "bad" words, and you are telling a story.... where the fuck did I steer this so far, I don't know, but if you pull anything helpful from this, you are welcome. I hope you will still come write on here someday again... hope I helped.
