Tomodachi Notes: Rainbow Dash's lance revisited. · 3:27pm Jan 4th, 2015

So, based on what I've seen show up on the TV Tropes page, people still don't get what Rainbow's weapon is supposed to be, and assume it's a jousting lance.

I've tried to correct this notion in the past...unsuccessfully, which is largely my fault. So I'm going to make another attempt to get all my readers on the same page here.

Rainbow Dash's weapon is not a jousting lance. It's a polearm weapon that's constructed in a similar manner to this:

Except it's a full-length polearm, where KingRanger's is more of a sceptre. Notice the head of the weapon? That's what Rainbow Dash's weapon looks like, except the spikes are narrow, sharp, and rainbow-colored.

?? The heck? Then why call it a lance at all?

2699869 Because "lance" does not automatically mean one of those jousting lances. It applies to a variety of other polearms as well.

"Lance" is derived from the Roman "Lancea", which was actually a throwing spear.
Any thrusting spear could theoretically bear the name, but what you're describing seems more like a bronze-age Halberd.

2699957 I went with lance because halberd doesn't really suit, and it's too long to call it a mace. It's a very unusual weapon, in any case.

2699984
Very much not a mace, that I'll grant you. Possibly a great-axe with dagger-blades rather than a unified blade.

2699984 Maybe just stick with the generic "polearm"?

So, like a partisan, maybe? Or a spetum?

There's gotta be some kind of obscure twelfth-century French polearm or something that's a better fit for this than 'lance'. I bet Twilight would know.

2700369 It doesn't matter, because it's staying as "lance" because I don't want to retcon every mention of it throughout the story to date in three different places. :derpytongue2: I just wanted to explain more clearly what it actually looks like.

Fair enough!

This might be a little out of left field, but did u know that the head of Kingrangers weapon is actually a kanji? It translates to'king'
ironically enough

2701757 You know something funny? I actually was aware of that! Since I do speak and read a little Japanese.

And it's...not ironic, it's intentional. Everything ABOUT his character design is centered around that specific kanji.

2701807 yeah, well, most wouldnt know what Ohranger even was if u were to ask them...just about everyone has seen Power Rangers Zeo though...

King Ranger? I see no King Ranger. What I DO see, though, is the horribly name Gold Ranger from Power Rangers Zeo.

Don't do this. Please. I honestly don't know if you're joking or not, but that's a quick way to get on my nerves. :ajbemused:
