One of the biggest influences on my writing has got to be the epic space opera TV series Babylon 5. It's mildly upsetting to me how few people I know who are all about sci fi TV shows have never given it a chance. It's not like Star Trek. It doesn't need to be compared to Star Trek and it's not Deep Space Nine. This is a show that rewards viewers for paying attention to the little things and definitely bears binge watching. The viewing order is a little discombobulated, what with the movies spliced here and there but a quick online search of what you should watch in what order should straighten it out. The first season is a bit of a slow crawl but it sets up season two nicely and the rest all falls into place. Drama, action, romance, space battles, intrigue, and delicious character development the likes of which were unheard of in that time period.
Very little comes more highly recommended from me.
