Ten misconceptions about the canon that tend to show up in fanfics · 10:56am Dec 29th, 2014

I've read quite a few fanfics and I've noticed a few, well, misconceptions about how Equestria works. These are just the ten topics I can think of of the top of my head.
#1-Alicorns: First off, Twilight's not immortal. Allow me to explain: Celestia and Luna were born Alicorns, while Twilight and Cadance became Alicorns. I have a theory about this. I think there used to be more natural Alicorns but something happened, either they left or they got wiped out. Meanwhile, we have unnatural Alicorns. I think that in order to become an Alicorn you must fulfill three requirements: [1] you must be a pony (Zebras probably count too), [2] you must attain a certain level of knowledge pertaining to a certain subject, [3] you must make use of a powerful magical artifact that pertains to your special talent. Let's do a little checklist shall we? Is Twilight a pony? Check! Does twilight know a lot about friendship? Check! Did she use a powerful magical artifact that pertained to her special talent? Check!
#2-Sombra: What Sombra did was his choice, there was no outside influence. He wasn't the heir to the throne, he just wanted power. That's why he did what he did. With the vast majority of the Crystal Empire hating and fearing him, his Magic was so powerful that when he was sealed, he managed to take the entire Empire with him.
#3-Dark Magic: Dark Magic seems to be powered by negative thoughts, but it doesn't seem to corrupt it's user. As far as I can tell it's powered by negative thoughts, but it doesn't induce them. Heck, Celestia used it, so it can't be all bad.
#4-Spike: Let's talk about Spike. First of all, Spike doesn't have wings, nor will he ever. Some dragons don't have wings and Spike is one of them. Also, the whole greed growth thing? That probably won't happen again. It was a puberty thing and he got over it.
#5-Ages: I'm going by the theory that they age at the same rate as humans, so let's start from there. To begin with, let's go with the ages of the Mane Six: they're all in their late teens. At the start of the series Twilight is about 17, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, and Pinkie are about 18, and Fluttershy is about 19. As of season 4 we've had two birthdays so Twilight, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, and Pinkie are about 18, and Fluttershy is still about 19. The CMC are most likely in their preteens, as are their classmates. Spike is... complicated. Physically and mentally he's about thirteen, but I have no idea how old he is chronologically. It's not just the fact that Twilight hatched him when she got her cutie mark, we don't know for sure how long he was in that egg. While I'm at it, Sunset Shimmer is about 18 or 19.
#6-The CMC's Special Talents: Sweetie Belle's talent is music, Applebloom's is design, and Scootaloo's is athleticism focusing on her scooter.
#7-Changelings: First off, Changelings probably eat food as well as love. Next, if they do have a hivemind, it's probably like the internet.
#8-Fluttershy: Fluttershy is physically the strongest of the Main Six. However, she doesn't show it because she doesn't want to bother anyone. She's bipolar and and her violent side usually only comes out when someone else is in danger.
#9-Angel Bunny: Angel is an important character. He's supportive, smart, and has a good heart under all that jerkiness. But he's also of the lapine persuasion. That is, to say, a rabbit. He may use physical force to get his point across but that's only because he has to. If he could talk, it would be a different story. In short, it isn't an abusive relationship; it's someone who has no other way to communicate trying get his point across to someone that has trouble standing up for herself.
#10-Sexuality: I'm doing this last because it's a very sensitive topic. To start with, I feel I should say that I have no problem with people that are attracted to their own gender. Some of the nicest people I've met were homosexual or bisexual. Now that I've said that I guess I should start. Okay, first off, the Main Six are all heterosexual. There may be some homosexual couples, but not amongst the Main Six. Second, their sexual appetites probably the same as human ones.

Now I would like to point out that I'm not asking people to change how they write their stories or to limit their ideas. I've seen some fascinating, intriguing, and downright amazing theories concerning the physics of the world of Equestria. I'm just throwing this out there for those that want to know. I'm thinking of doing more of these, please tell me what you think.
