Discord! Under His Rule — Re-utilization of Aspects · 6:13am Dec 26th, 2014
Merry Christmas guys! It's been an awesome year, and wrapped up quite nicely for me, to be fair. Now, I wanted to do a fic more in-season than a more-or-less dystopian novel, but that thought came too late and in the wrong places. Fortunately though, I'm glad I was able to get at least something out to you guys that I'm very excited about, and I think you'll enjoy (you know, if you're into adventure sort of things).
However, the starting point has some cliches and reuse of some aspects of earlier ideas and writings. Given there isn't anything new under the sun at this point in our evolving society with works of literature, all of these can be understandable. I don't feel any remorse for using these aspects; they're archetypes that have a lot of potential. With that in mind, there are some I'd like to bring up and explain for those of you who are interested.
PLEASE NOTE THAT FROM THIS POINT ON, IT MAY CONTAIN SOME SPOILERS FROM THAT OF THIS STORY AND MY OTHER WORKS. IF YOU'D LIKE TO PROCEED, THEN CLICK ON THE BREAK AND LET'S GET STARTED.
Now that I'm done doing Caps-Lock/Canter-Lock, let's get into it.
One of the first things I'd like to address is the fact that our lead character, Angel Down, is amnesiac. This was a point where I really struggled with developing his character. Would I rather A) Have him be entirely cognitive and journey with the princesses or B) Have him not have any cognition (except socially) whatsoever. The main reason why this came up was for multiple reasons, that I didn't want Angel Down to be like Loft from Drafts 1 and 2, and I wanted to re-utilize some aspects from Grandiur. It was really the latter reason that I actually made him amnesiac; I thought I could do a character and story like that much better than what preceded it. I also figured that it would drive the plot forward as well with that sub-conflict. No shame there.
But one of my more interesting decisions was how it evolved in circumstance. In the first draft, I had a badass main character that joins a badass group of freedom fighters. In the second draft, the main character joined out of necessity, and would evolve into that badass nature. In this draft however, unlike the Attack-on-Titan-y plot points, I shifted gears into a sort of Hobbit-y plot (pretty much a small band of heroes reclaiming land). But this draft is less like the Hobbit than the other two were to Attack on Titan. The villan has a different motive, character relationships go from pure spite to friends and probably to romantic interests. The romantic interests will not be as pushed as PJ's fanfiction, though. Kudos to whoever out there gets that.
And, sorry for all of you who want to hate the antagonist with a passion. Yes... I'm going to humanize Discord. I'm going to give him an ulterior motive other than being more or less of a sadistic freak. This involves some lore making among other things, but I want some continuities of his character to be present in both his reformed self and his unreformed self other than just causing chaos. I want some drama, dammit!
And that will do it for now. If you haven't read the first two chapters of Discord! Under His Rule yet, well, what the crap are you reading this blog post for? Go read it! I will see you guys next time... textually... with a stick. Byeee!
