State of the Writer, April 2024!

    It's another boring one! I ain't wrote nothin'! :B

It actually feels lately like I've been crawling out of a pit? So maybe there's a light ahead? But it's also blocked by Balatro lol somepony save me D:

The only other thing relevant to this blog is that I've had notes for a vs. post sitting in my notes document for probably the entire month now, what is wrong with me? D:

Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Present Perfect vs. Newborn Cuties · 1:46pm Dec 25th, 2014

G1 G2 G3 G3.5

(No complaining, no one's up yet and Christmas hasn't started. :V)

So, along with G3 and G3.5, technically part of the latter, was a series of two webisodes collectively known as "Once Upon a Pony Time" and generally referred to, in my experience, as "Newborn Cuties". They feature the G3 ponies talking about what life was like when they were toddlers. This should be fun, right?

Right?

NO NEVER FUCKING AGAIN

Yeah, I watched one of these back when I was exploring the old gens after getting into MLP:FiM, and it turned out to be the most godawful piece of 'animation' ever created. About the time Scootaloo started bounding from chair to chair, her sprite completely static, shouting "Party party party!" was when I quit, lest I puke my eyes out.

Merry fucking Christmas.

So what have we learned? The old gens are not as bad as we've been told. Well, G1 sure isn't, and I found ways to enjoy My Little Pony Tales and G3 despite them being bad. G3.5 was a step forward and two steps back, while Newborn Cuties are COMPLETELY DEVOID OF MERIT AND A BLIGHT ON THE NAME OF ANIMATION.

But I'm not mad. :B

Anyway, I linked all my old journals up there if'n you wanted to get the full experience. Hope you folks have enjoyed this as much as I did! I gotta go buy me some G3 DVDs now...

I hope you have a Merry Christmas in spite of your self-torture.

Why would you do this to yourself?

I saw an episode of "newborn cuties" once. I had nightmares for weeks.

Things Man Was Not Meant To Know ahead

...

That was ... um ... :rainbowderp:

Well, I watched one with you, at least. Shared pain is lessened, as Spider Robinson says. Merry Hearthsmas.

I notice that there were four animators listed in the credits. Not credited: Their mother's basement, or the paste they ate before cracking open their brand-new copy of Flash.

I do have one nice thing to say about that video. A full third of its nine-minute run-time was taken up with the slow establishing landscape-zoom intro and outro (plus the credits), so only two-thirds of it could be classified as war crimes under the Geneva Convention. :raritydespair:

On the bright side, I have now watched a My Little Pony video that Double Rainboom's pacing and comedic timing both compare favorably to.

Aw, didn't you even try "Over Two Rainbows"? If you thought "So Many Different Ways To Play" was good, you'll really like that one! And be sure to watch both episodes all the way through - the morals are spectacular!

Brilliant. :D

Y'know, you are absolutely right, and I never thought about it like that. All I can say is that now I know unicorns come from wishes on clouds or something.

NO SHUT UP YOU CANNOT FOOL ME

You're a braver pony-lover than I'll ever be.
But really, the generation-by-generation reviews are both funny and useful.
They are much appreciated.
Happy Holidays!

Glad you liked them, and the same to you. :D

I watched one of these

Pah and pshaw. Why does everyone only watch "So Many Different Ways to Play"? It's such a pale shadow of "Over Two Rainbows". The animation in "OTR" is in another league, as all who have seen it will testify! And really, how could you miss out on the epic tale of Rainbow Dash's scarf?

Ah well, it's Boxing Day here in the UK now, but I hope your Christmas was merry, bright and all those other clichéd things.

Yes but is it worse than Twilestia?
