Is actually a surprisingly good way to get inspired!
Not too long ago I decided to go back to my earlier chapters and Lazarus and read through them in order to fix a few dumb typos I learned how to fix cause of my editors. Mainly in the punctuation sections. And by golly I'm happy I did! Yet, I'm also bummed by it too.
I noticed in Chapter 1 the amount of detail I went into describing some characters and even the rooms they're in. For instance, the break room Johnny and Nelson Grimes were in when eating their breakfast. When the two characters first step foot in there I described piratically everything the room from the T.V., to the placement of the chairs!
I don't know about you guys but I fucking love that shit!
So why did I stop doing it in some cases?
Re-reading those chapters reminded me of a few plot points I was hinting at those months back. Good ones too and those points maybe returning, also it showed me how much I started slack off in some cases. Probably because of stress I was going through in those previous times, or how school was right around the corner, or I was just being lazy like usual.
Though I sound like I'm moping I'm actually quite happy I went back and read those pieces. Because now I feel a little more motivated to return to those habits of using tons of flavor text to help enrich the story. Yes, flavor text. Not fluff, ladies and gentlemen.Yes there is a difference.
First Contact was mainly pointless fluff, which is why it was so long. A lot of it was pointless and unneeded information!
Where as the Star Swirl entries, along with some earlier chapters were primarily flavor text. Which is really fine and intricate details without getting too carried away/breaking flow.
Hopefully I'll be able to push myself back to my old habits of telling one of my new favorite stories without rambling on about some dude's shirt and how each piece of fabric laces over one another–aaaand breathe!
