Sufficiently fanboying over Bond 24 · 5:08pm Dec 4th, 2014
This morning I woke up driven by the knowledge that the information I sought was out there in the world. That night, during my surprisingly restful sleep, EON Production hosted a live stream at the 007 stage in Pinewood Studios in which they revealed the title and cast of the twenty-fourth James Bond film.
Having bookmarked the proper page just before bed, I managed to turn on my computer, hop to the page and start the recorded video before I was able to see any text that may spoil the surprise. I was greeted by a surprisingly small and unfortunately blase audience of camera toting and note scribbling media representatives. Up upon the stage were director Sam Mendes and an uncharacteristically quiet and reserved Barbara Broccoli. I was admittedly saddened at the absence of Michael G Wilson whose very presence would have undoubtedly given some much needed flair to the hole event.
However, I was not about to let the disappointing lack of exuberance spoil my excitement. As Mr. Mendes walked away and drew attention to the large monitor in the back, my breathing grew heavy. I was torn between wanting them to just get it over with and flash the title and wanting to be toyed with by a slow and dramatic reveal. Rightfully, they chose the latter. Indecipherable lines and curves that made up parts of lettering bled onto the screen in a slow and mocking manner. My mind raced I tried to make out the letters before the full reveal. That could be a C. Is that a seven?
By the time the title was fully revealed and I could make out precisely what it said, beads of joy sprinkled the corners of my eyes. I let out a gasp that was not only audible but far higher a pitch than I am known to speak. I continuously mouthed the words "no way! No freaking way!" at my computer screen. Or at least I thought I mouthed them. I would not be surprised if those words had escaped my mouth and quite loudly.
There on the screen was a single word. It was a word that made every pore on my skin tremble. It was a well chosen word; a word that I knew only people in the same boat as me could fully appreciate and that anyone else outside of the circle would not be able to recognize the significance of this word. That word was Spectre.
With the appropriately ghastly looking title on the screen, the logo was complete by a bullet hole shot through the 'C' an creating a spider web of cracked glass. It was only later that I realized that the broken glass took on the shape of an octopus, a fact that further magnified my elation. What struck me as criminal was the lack of outcry by the audience. Where was the screaming? Where was the whistling cheers? Instead the media continued to point their cameras, scribble their notes and live tweet or whatever it was they were doing at the time. If only the reveal was made before an appropriate audience as was done with Skyfall. No, unfortunately, the reveal for Specter was not a Spectacle.
Still my own heart raced as I had to remove my glasses to wipe my eyes. The next point of focus was the car that had been sitting near the stage the entire time underneath a shroud. I had assumed that they were going to announce to return of the DB5 after its destruction during the climax of Skyfall. Instead, Mr. Mendes revealed the newest luxury line, the DB10. Now I myself am not a car guy by any stretch of the imagination but even I could appreciate the beauty and majesty of the car. Its very curves screamed the elegence and sophistication that was Bond.
Then came the cast. I was relieved, but not surprised, at the return of the MI6 regulars that were expertly set up in Skyfall. Fiennes, Harris and Whishaw were all returning. New cast members included Dave Bautista, Lea Seydoux and Monica Bellucci. But the star of the show (outside the returning Daniel Craig of course), was the brilliant actor Christoph Waltz who, although he has been credited as a character named Oberhausen, everyone knows is playing the head of Spectre, Earnt Stavro Blofeld-- the rights of whom were finally procured by EON from the McClory state.
And that was that. The announcement was made and the stream ended with the same lack of spectacle as it began. The entire announcement was such a bizarre combination of pure excitement and subtlety that, just as the title of the new film would suggest, it could only be described as a Spectre.
