The Canterlot Embassy · 10:10am Jun 28th, 2012

Daylight Burning is coming to a close very soon, and in preparation for my next project, I've been throwing some time into a handful of other things this week. One of them is finally finishing Paw Prints, and working on an outline for the second Crusader Teen Mystery novella. The other project is an experiment in political intrigue at the US Embassy in Canterlot. It falls into the "serious" HiE category, although it's certainly not about bald-faced wish-fulfillment, so much as it's about exploring the actualities of interspecies relationships, set against a backdrop of growing political tension between Equestria and the various factions of Earth.

I hope you are all having a great day. Stay literate, my bronies!

When you say "soon", how many chapters/words/days are we speaking about?

That's cool!

Myself, I'm still waiting on my fic "Dash's Tears In The Rain" to get approved. The mods are taking like forever. :fluttershbad:

I know your stuff will be great.

194265 Thanks Swiper, that queue can move really really slowly sometimes, right?

Sounds awesome, I shall read it!!!

Yeah! :raritydespair:

If you want a peek, it's at: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/33896/Dash%27s-Tears-in-the-Rain

To be honest, writing was a real learning expierence. I feel like maybe I should just deal with the fact that my heart would rather do light and silly comedies or clopfics... than dark and serious sadfics... even though I crave social acceptance and everyone knows that the latter authors are viewed better. :trixieshiftright::trixieshiftleft:

194262 I've begun to realize that setting deadlines and length limits for myself on Daylight Burning has been relatively useless, and perhaps even vexing to the audience. So, it is with the utmost uncertainty that I declare Daylight Burning damn near close to finished. If you read Ch 12, you know that the final battle is at hand. There is only one more chapter (in 2 parts for EQD's sake) and an epilogue, and you can expect them all by Friday.

ORLY?

194278 I totally disagree that dark/sadfic authors are more respected. I think comedy authors are just as respected (if they're GOOD, right?) and they are far, far more widely READ. Daylight Burning has been a hell of a fun test of my abilities, but its readership has been relatively low compared to... well, YOURS to name just one fellow artist. :twilightsheepish: I've started to suspect that the only way I'll be able to hit the feature list is to write a cute comedy based more on the show. In your experience, Swiper, have you found one genre of story to outperform another in popularity?

194306
To be honest, popularity seems random w.r.t my works. I seem to crave respectability and loving comments from friends more than popularity.

But then, I'm going into sheer navel gazing here.

I'd actually really like it if you'd read my sad Dashie story, since you have the serious enough mind to see if I'm just being prissy and melodramatic with it.

194321 LOL's alright I'll take a look and leave a comment. :raritywink:

:yay:

Let's be honest. You can't write for popularity.

You have to write for yourself. "Always write for yourself first, and then edit as well as revise yourself in order to connect better with the audience that you care about." I've long had that motto (but I've been still felt whiny and needy, always wanting reader's love like a changling to just drink it in)...

194334 I saw this Family Guy the other night where Chris is in some writing class or something, and the teacher is admonishing him thusly: "I like your writing style, but you're still writing like you want us to like you! You have to write from within, from within!" And Chris screams, "I don't know what you want from me!!!!" And the writing teacher is all, "THAT! Write THAT!"

I'm sure I butchered the dialogue, but you get the idea.
