    Mechanics Advice: Footnotes (Self-Demonstrating Version)

For the non-self-demonstrating version, go here.

Footnotes*! To do them right, enclose (2) the number (c), and use exactly the same format in-text and at the footnote (4). Asterisks are right out*****.

    *These things right here.

I know, I'm late to this party...

My grandparents were in town. We had a great time, but it did take up all of my time. So now I have to post this belatedly.

    Miss the old site search?

I never really used the old site search. But I'm told it was a google-powered site search. The good news is, you can get the same thing on your own. Simply search google however you usually would, but add "site:fimfiction.net" (no quotes) to the end of it. But that's kind of annoying. Is there a better way?

    Probably.

    Story Tagged Blog Etiquette

The most important thing to remember when posting a story-tagged blog is the intent of the feature. The story tag feature is intended to let you inform readers about things relevant to the story. It is not intended to let you turn people tracking your story into people following you. If your blog post is not relevant to the story, don't tag the story. That

Miss the old site search? · 10:51pm Dec 2nd, 2014

I never really used the old site search. But I'm told it was a google-powered site search. The good news is, you can get the same thing on your own. Simply search google however you usually would, but add "site:fimfiction.net" (no quotes) to the end of it. But that's kind of annoying. Is there a better way?

Probably.

If you use Google Chrome, Firefox, or IE, you can set up a custom search engine without much trouble. Guides are after the break.

Google Chrome:
Open the "Manage Search Engines" page from the Settings page. If you're not sure how, here is a visual guide. It will look something like this:

Scroll down all the way to the bottom. There will be three boxes:

In the first box, put a name for this custom search. It can be as long or as short as you like. I put "fimfic google", in case I want to add a shortcut to the new search in the future. In the second box, put a keyword. This doesn't have to be a word (it could be a single letter, or a few letters), but it should be something easy to type, but also something that you will remember. I used "fimg" (g for google). In the third box, put exactly this:
https://www.google.com/search?q=%s+site%3Afimfiction.net

Click "Done". Now you're set up with a custom search! Let's try it out:
Type your keyword into the omnibox:

Press tab (or type a space), then type the rest of your search:

John Perry's suffering...just what I wanted to see :pinkiecrazy:

If you use Firefox or Internet Explorer, you'll need to make an OpenSearch plugin. Ready2Search works well for this (I found it through the mozilla dev wiki, and it's been there since at least 2007, so despite the poor English it seems reputable enough). Here is a working example. All you need to do is click on the link next to the IE, Firefox, and Chrome logos ("OpenSearch plug-in Fimfiction Google"), then click "add" in the dialogue box that pops up (leave every box unchecked). But you can click "change the plug-in" and change the search description or name if you like. Just click "Make search plug-in" when you're done to bring you back to the page where you can add the search to your browser. You can also add a tiny image if you like.
