Results of the Martial Arts Tournament I went to. · 9:29pm Nov 2nd, 2014
Alright so I've finally gotten around to telling you guys everything that happened. Cool? Cool.
I wanted to get these high quality pictures a friend of mine took while I was preforming for this, but I haven't been able to speak to him lately since he got sick and has been busy with work.
So here goes nothing.
Wake up at 5:30 AM in the morning to get picked up by my three friends to start the drive to Houston. Turns out the dude driving was one of the worst drivers I've ever see... I had to back seat drive for 7 hours. It even turns out that was his first time in big city traffic. So I think i had about 8 heart attacks that first drive.
When we arrived though, the hotel turned out to be a huge surprise. It wasn't some cheap hotel you stay in for a couple days for a convention. This was a 5 star hotel with koi fish in the lobby and waterfalls n shit. It even smelled like a forest because they have smelly machines that shoot smelly stuff in the air.
At 9 PM or so we had our school dinner which was great, some of the best Italian food I've had in a long time and it really helped me get to know everyone there. After that, turns out the hotel has a nice pool so I borrowed a friend's swim trunks because he was never going to use them anyway. And actually practiced all my material in the pool. Which was awesome.
After that, it's go to sleep for 5 hours to get up at 4 am and go actually help set up the whole tournament. In which the coolest thing happened, I got to meet Sung Jin and Alex Suh, sons of the Grandmaster, 9th and 8th degree masters.
Then... the tournament begins, and there, there my friends is where the biggest news of all lies.
During that tournament, my teacher got grand champion, our school got 2nd in the world by only getting beaten by the sheer number of the number 1 school, and even then we were super close having only half the people they brought
And...
Silver in forms, and gold in techniques, and I only got silver on forms because of this metal plate on the floor that moves when you step on it, it made me lose balance when I had to balance on one leg because it shifted, but still got a 9.5/10 (averaged) on the form. Just got beat by literally .2 points by another contestant.
On my techniques, I got 9.6, 9.8, and 9.7 from each judge. I beat everyone by a landslide.
Also, I got front row seats to the South Korean demo team and masters demonstrations. IT WAS AMAZING!
Here's a highlight video of their performance. The first half is from the European tournament, the performances were pretty much the same so this still counts as what I saw. And the second half is bits from the actual tournament I went to.
I hope to one day be as good as those kids because hot damn.
