This is an awesome bookshelf idea, and everyone should do it · 9:02pm Oct 24th, 2014
The pterrorgrine one, not the Razgriz one (though I would be curious to know what 'poking material' means).
'Why I followed you' is an awesome bookshelf because it answers the one question I would ask my followers if I ever got the chance, and it's something I know most writers on this site would be curious to know. If you follow someone after reading a particular story that you liked, you should totally add it to this kind of bookshelf to let them know, because that's something that I know that at least I would really love to know about. Followers would be far less scary if I knew what the hell they were expecting of me.
Go do it, and then tell pterrorgrine how smart he is for coming up with this.
Holy shit, I'm horse famous. (And by SHEER COINCIDENCE, apparently one of the first people to see this -- I started writing this comment about a minute after the post went up.)
I've been thinking for a while that if I ever do any serious criticism, it might be fun to do author overviews where I rate their fics against each other. For such a thing it would only make sense to single out which stories drew my attention in the first place, in addition to top recommendations from their archive. It was only last night that I realized that sort of thing is what bookshelves are for.
I was a little worried, once I got underway, that I would just be reinforcing any "one-hit-wonder" feelings in authors -- I've read everything Eakin ever wrote, and here he is going "Oh, someone followed me because of "Hard Reset? You don't say." So I'm glad you liked it. And I did everyone I follow in one big push, so even though I can't remember which story got me started in a lot of cases (and there are more than one per author in a few), you can look at the whole shelf for essentially a "Greatest Hits"-oriented favorites list (and indirect following recommendation system).
Oh, and this is as good a place as any to congratulate Midnightshadow for unintentionally winning that shelf. Pretty much every story of theirs that I've read is on there -- I found out about "Midnight Run", "Teething Problems"/"Calling the Shots", and Out and About in the Equestrian Kingdom completely separately, and they're all very very different stories, and any one of them would have made me a follower, so when I found out that they were all by one person I mashed that eyeball button like my life depended on it. (And, uh, haven't read any of MS's other fics since. I have a long tracking list.)
Also, any excuse for people to tell me how smart I am is a valid and appreciated one.
You know, that is not a bad idea at all.

Yep, you were pretty smart. My reaction was the same one as HoofBiting up there. Congrats on finding a great way to use the Bookshelves, man.
Ah, and in case you're wondering, HB (or whatever the fuck I should call you, because HoofBitingActionOverload is too long), I followed you mainly because of You Want Me.
Spring is Dumb reassured me that I'd chosen right, btw. I even read The Sleep Snuggling, and I hate clop (tho I stopped reading once they got steamy and went straight to the end).
Maybe I should create a bookshelf like that one too. Hm.
Sadly, in most cases I don't remember the particular story that got me to follow someone, especially good writers where I have a number of their works faved.
Of course, that's all the more reason to have a shelf like that.
Huh... K.
Not a bad idea, but I don't think it would work for everyone. I follow some people just for blog posts, and the ones I follow for stories usually had at least two stories make it on to my favorites.
Of course, I barely follow anyone, so maybe I'm biased.
Huh. I've already gotten two of those, just in the last three minutes. c.c Clearly, you are powerful.

Done and done.

Clearly everyone should signal boost this. I already did in my own blog, because it seemed like such a good idea to me. Not that I have half as much pull as HoofBiting does, but... every little bit helps, right?

I'm ambivalent towards it myself, if only because I can't remember why I followed people/it wasn't because of a story. :B But that's just me.

Oh, probably. But I would probably have OCD if I wasn't aware of the fact that I am the way that I am.
Also I now have like, 15 story tabs open for other stories I need to read.
So... what does horse fame get you? Cash? A statue to your genius? Cookies? I hope it's cookies.

This shelf isn't incompatible with multiple reasons for following. I follow djthomp for their rad user page, gearsofsolitude because they gave me an amusing quid-pro-quo deal, and Fimfcarchive because, y'know, I want to download the Fimfcarchives; I follow a few others whose stories I haven't even read because I want to find those stories later, and the authorial connection seems more relevant than adding to my RiL shelf; I have no clue which of Obselescence's or Bad Horse's or a few other peoples' stories piqued my interest. In all of those cases, they simply don't get added to the shelf. Meanwhile, people who can credit multiple stories with grabbing my initial attention can get multiple slots on the shelf, like I described with Midnightshadow above.
Well then, let me say that after liking what you did with Chrysalis in A Good Princess, and the very evocative descriptions in Her Blood Ran in Hollows in the Floor (and thus why I Liked them), I decided to follow you. Enjoy!
