Those who can't do, teach. And those who can't teach, make MLP audio books, apparently.

Second Reading: "Where Have the Stars Gone?" · 8:41am Oct 17th, 2014

New reading is live.

I loved this story the first time I read it. It deals with Celestia's immortality in a very human and believable sort of way. I'm a bit worried that my reading didn't do it justice.

I had what I thought was a brilliant idea: record the narration first, and then record all of each character's dialogue all at once, then splice it in with the narration in post. The goal was to keep the voices consistent, which was one problem I had with my first reading. What I didn't anticipate was just how time consuming all that splicing would be. The story is less than 3,000 words and doesn't contain very much dialogue, but it took forever. Part of the problem is I'm trying to do all my editing on a tiny laptop screen on the train or my lunch break. Also, I find Audacity's interface clunky and cumbersome. I'm convinced I could do the editing in half the time in Garageband, but my OS X box is at home, and once I'm home, I have 75% less free time. My life is some perverted time management game on challenge mode.

I think I'll do Old Friends for my next reading. My plan is to slowly work my way through the Royal Canterlot Library, maybe starting with the shorter stories. Frankly, it's probably not a great way to get viewership, since the target audience will likely have already read most of the stories in there, but I figure I'm doing a public service for the community by giving voice to the best of the best.
