Just super happy with this scene so far and couldn't help but share:
”No!” I couldn't let that stand! No! My head jerked around, there would be no confusion! I couldn't even let myself think of that happening! “I would-”
My words caught in my throat as my breath hitched in pain and I flinched away instinctively, my horn lighting up.
There was dead silence as I stared at an equally wide-eyed Sure Scissors, my brain trying to catch up-
There was a wet *thwap* and my eyes flicked over to the sound-
… was that my ear...?
…
That was a piece of my ear.
My eyes returned to a horrified looking Sure Scissors.
She'd just cut off part of my ear.
We both looked over at the bloodied piece of ear on the hardwood floor.
That was practically half of my ear, cut off at an angle.
Our eyes returned to a lock and my ears unconsciously flexed, a sharp, stabbing pain followed by a dull ache making themselves known in my mind at my right ear. The soft *pat* of a droplet hitting the floor was soon followed by a slow pitter-patter as the blood began to drip freely from my ear... stub of an ear...
Sure Scissors pupils had shrunk to tiny pinrpicks, “I-I-I-... I'm sorry-” she stammered softly past the scissors in her mouth as she began to tremble like a leaf.
She'd cut off half of my ear!
She hadn't meant to... obviously so.
Her whole job was to cut hair and not do exactly that!
Her name is Sure Scissors, her cutie mark is a pair of scissors, this is probably the first time this has happened!
She was freaking apologizing! After going on a damn tirade about how saying sorry wasn't enough!

The light around my horn died out, and I could practically feel myself deflate, “You're forgiven."
“What?!”
Ok, now I'm curious as to what happened to Emeris that would have caused him to accidentally lose his ear.

Seriously, what I'm thinking is going on here is Emeris went for a mane cut and the stylist was angry about what the curse made her do. While ranting in anger, she was distracted and had a slip up. Oops.
Now let's see if I guessed correctly.
I think they were already having an argument, one where Emersi was defending himself for a change!

Huh. Odd. My comments on other stories seem to up and vanish.

... Basically. Yeah. Without the literally superhuman power and healing ability he had as Gary, Emeris is going to get slowly worn away by pretty much every foe he faces. He's going to lose bits and pieces and function here and there. It's not going to be pretty, but it's the realistic Consequence of being a "hero" without superhuman healing.

Or, in other words, he's playing the part of the 'Invincible Hero' without the required secondary powers for said roll. I suppose any kind of hero would qualify for that, though.
In other news, Emeris also fits the Broken Ace category. He's awesome and all, but... Yeah. He's Emiya Shirou levels of mental and emotional broken, as said before. That's not good.
And, low and behold, the above teaser showcases some of that brokeness! Congrats, Emmy! You've earned the '(Too) Easily Forgiven' Trope!

Not so much that as he's being forced to play the part of a hero at least one, maybe two "categories" above what he should be. Like a DnD character operating at CL+4. Doable, but not only impressive, but also costly.
And woo! He comes across as a Broken Ace! Intentional, but he's not supposed to come across as an Ace just yet, at least not heavily. And yeah, he's broken, there are things that he can't do, But for all his issues, he can (and slowly, will) get better overall. But some things are broken in a way that's unfixable, you can't unbreak it without breaking him all over again or changing who he is on a fundamental level. And it'll be a while before the other characters realize this.
Emeris is the fucking king of forgiving too easily, wait till you see later! This is nothing. He's only lost a non-functional part of his body this time!

Emeris knows limited telepathy, that's how he'd forgive them.
Also, Emeris isn't ultra-polite like Shirou is. Note that he's able to tease and be playful in a way that Shirou never shows. Unlike Shirou, Emeris is perfectly able to live for himself. His problems are superficially similar to Shirou's and share some symptoms, but they are fundamentally different.
Shirou has Survivors Guilt, Emeris does not.
Shirou is not symptomatic of PTSD (though it would be perfectly justified if he was), while Emeris is.
Shirou has no self-preservation, or at least can't place the value of his own life above anothers. Emeris' problem is a bit different from that, the details will become obvious later on, though it appears similar right now.
Shirou best finds happiness through the happiness of others (It's often flanderized that he can *only* find happiness in that of others, but that's more extreme than he really is), Emeris is perfectly able to have his own happiness, though he definitely likes making others happy.
Shirou has a level of determination and focus that Emeris doesn't.
Shirou, while capable of hatred, isn't able to rage and loathe as Emeris can.
Shirou is a sword. Emeris... Emeris is something else.
Etc. Etc. There's more, but it hasn't come up in story (or been foreshadowed enough) for me to spoil it yet

... That first part. I laughed a bit harder than I should have.
But yeah, I've been watching too much Fate/Zero and reading too much Fate stuff. So I got Fate on the brain.
And yeah, the two are vastly different in terms of personality and such. Shirou is an extreme doormat, while Emeris is... something. similar aye, but something different. I suppose we'll see as we go, eh?
Like you said... Shirou is a Sword, a, to himself, weapon to be wielded by others.
Emeris is... not. While I don't quite have a clue as to what yet, I can't help but feel something on the tip of my tongue... Of course, considering I forget stuff all the frigging time, I'll likely have lost it by the time I finish this.
