i found some software pretty much for exactly the situation im in with this shit, but it cost money. like 70 bucks worth just for me to use it twice ever (once to get the fics off of the drive and once to get all the stuff onto the new drive ill eventually get) but at least it came with a free trial. so i used that and had to leave it running like all day, overnight before it retrieved the files
but then it turns out that actually saving them is a feature only available in the paid version.
that is the scummiest bullshit ever i swear to fukkin god.
anyway, i've found another thing that apparently does the same thing. it's still something you have to buy, still offers a free trial, but hopefully will at least let me actually recover my fucking files without extorting $70 out of me for a program i'll use a grand total of twice.
this one at least is moving a bit faster and will hopefully not take eight hours to complete. i'll update you on this once this fails/succeeds (hopefully the latter because i really want to get back to writing)
Depending on what exactly broke and how you're set up, G4L is entirely free and may be able to do the job.
2479789 if this one also turns out to be scummy and charge me a ridiculous amount of money to do something its already done then i'll try that one. thank you for the advice, friend ~
