A Poetic Decision · 9:22pm Sep 16th, 2014
As you all know I'm a freshman in college. Yesterday, we had a poetry slam and a few of my friends (one who has an album of his own) spoke and Levi the Poet and Chris Bernstorf. I'm a biology (pre-pharmacy) major and yet... I feel like I want to do spoken word as my career. That is a HUGE change. I was already considering a English minor but now I don't know what to think. I feel like being a porffesional poet is what I'm called to do but I'm so hesitant because of the stability of today's economy and the possible stability of my future family. What do you guys think I should do?
My friend:
I'd suggest doing it on the side as a very deep hobby, while still maintaining your current major. Like you stated, the economy is rough, and even though writing and poetry can be very lucrative careers, they're not really the types of things that pay a majority of the bills, so to speak. Like I said, follow your dreams, but also think logically at the same time.
I never went to a [big] university, so I don't know the ins and outs of a real college education. I went to a "pretend" college, known as community college.
That's be one of the nicheiest niche professions I can think of off the top of my head.
