Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Stepping Down from Fanfic Writing; Focusing on Life, Career, Game Dev

This blog post might not come as any surprise given the last new chapter of anything I posted was a year ago. I meandered away from the site for some time, unsure if I would feel like coming back. I'm making this blog post because I'm pretty sure now at this point I won't want to write ponyfic any time soon. I really regret leaving A Darkened Land unfinished, since I did truly enjoy writing quite

    An Update

After being silent so long I guess I should start by saying this isn't a gloom and doom type blogpost, heh.

Unpopular Opinion #6: Learning Theory Can Kill You

Okay, maybe "kill you" is a bit overdramatic, but "clickbait" is sort of a theme of these blog posts' titles anyway so yeah.

I recently came back from Bronycan where I spoke on 3 separate hour-long writing panels. I got some pretty good words of encouragement from people saying they learned something, and actually in talking that much about writing I felt I learned something too.

My Slow Writing and Life Update

I'm 4th year University student studying Computer Science. I'm into writing, art, programming, and game development. I tend to plan far in advance for the future, and previously I've mentioned A Darkened Land will likely be my last novel length fic.

    Bronycan Details

Hey there! So I'm all set for Bronycan and they've got the schedule up on their website.

In a surprise turn of events, the coordinator approved of all of our panels! That means I'll be sitting in as a panelist on 3 of the 4 writing panels our little group is organizing. Here's the times/topics for all four:

    Friday:

Equestria From Dust in the Royal Canterlot Library (And BronyCAN After-blog) · 1:29am Aug 30th, 2014

I might try buffing up one of my old, unpublished one shots for publishing before the new semester starts. I'm hoping to have plenty of time to write this semester since 2/4 courses I'm taking are computer graphics—which is basically my schtick. That said, I'm also going to be working on learning Unreal Engine 4 with the intention of creating some demos for my portfolio before I apply for a co-op job next semester.

The long-fic currently dubbed 'Darkquestria' I'm working on is over 10,000 words right now and I'm nearly complete the third chapter. I find it a lot easier to write points of tension than points of downtime. So far I've written the initial hook, then the downtime afterwards was slow to write, but as things are about to pick up again I'm hoping so too will the pace of my writing pick up. Also when going through my old google docs and doing some (late) spring cleaning, I found an old multichapter story premise I'd forgotten about, and now I really want to write it sometime soon. So I guess you're getting me for a minimum of 2 more multichapter fics.

As far as Horsegame development goes, we held our panel at BronyCAN to a decently sized audience of... 30-50 people I'd say? Much of what we showed was hastily slapped together and poorly prepared, as we spent right up until the last days before the con trying to cram in new features and build new maps. The result was... bumpy. I think given that we are still in pre-alpha (and said as much) people were forgiving. Funny enough, things behind the scenes are much smoother than what we showed.

We're making sure the game is pretty.

We're still waiting for BronyCAN V/A guys to upload the video of our panel (and the fanfiction panel I was on), but I'll be sure to make a blog post once they're up.

As far as the fanfiction panel went, we heard it went even better than last year by quite a few people, but I felt like I dropped the ball quite a lot. I was operating on very little sleep. (When listing off some background ponies, my co-panelist piped up, "Applejack?" and rather than think it, I accidentally said "Fuck off" out loud.) I might be imagining it as a lot worse than it actually was. I'm hoping that's the case, but I guess I won't be sure until the video is uploaded.

Friday night was mostly spent working on the Horsegame build, but Saturday night we went out to a Vietnamese pho restaraunt with three of the lead Legends of Equestria developers (who were great guys and gals, respectively). Following that we went back to their room with some booze and played the Twilight's Secret Shipfic Folder card game. Apparently we made enough noise that people were talking about us the following day.

So that's my world. Considering that reading the Royal Canterlot Library review still has me feeling pumped up even after writing all this, I'm probably going to go write.

Congratulations on getting From Dust into the Royal Canterlot Library. It seriously deserves its place there.

Good LORD I loved that story. When I finished it up, I was sitting in a fireplace-heated hangout with family, sitting on the comfiest couch-chair in the world, reading an incredibly entertaining story with an awesome ending, and everything was right with the world.

Yesssssssssss, can't wait for the Darkquestria release. It's gonna be epic, mang. :rainbowkiss:

Congrats!

And yes, I could tell you were tired, but I recall you giving lots of good advice nonetheless. Importantly, you were a good counterpoint to, well, me.
