Afterthoughts: Reading a Great Fic · 8:44am Aug 25th, 2014
So, I just finished reading the (so far) two book cycle of Of the Hive and For the Hive.
As some of you might have noticed, there were no updates on my stories at all for the past several days - you can blame the fics above, since I was riveted to the point of sleeping only the bare minimum in order to read as soon and as much as possible. All in all, my whole weekend ended up being a read-fest, much to the dismay of friends and family.
There is something great to be said about literature that just makes you keep going and going. It is especially hard to achieve in an established fantasy world, where the rules are mostly set in stone and the author has to move within the cracks. Still, there are those that succeed, find purchase and chip away to mold their own stories, introduce outlandish and fascinating ideas.
I can only envy the talent and imagination of such people. Be it through wide knowledge or experience, these individuals help prove that literature, even in today's heavily audio-visual preferring society, has a lot of merit and can be as enjoyable as a game or movie, even more so.
Going back to the subject of For and Of the Hive - both are in my honest opinion one of the best changeling fics out there. The author made the enigmatic race have so much depth and complexity that it baffles me. By comparison My Little Changeling seems kinda bleak and closed minded, which I hope to alleviate in book two of the series.
Add to that an immense variety of additional lore, and you have a world that both is and isn't Equestria. The rules of the world are crafted in a very imaginative way, where magic is powerful but not overly so and has its limits, ones that are backed up by logic. It is gems like those that make me personally squeal in joy and wish there was a third book out already, if only to see those damn Sphinxes pay for killing ponies.
I'll be suffering withdrawal from the high this fic got me on for a longer time. It doesn't happen too often, and is quite agonizing, but I'm happy to feel it nontheless. I had fun reading, and here's to a swift third book!
one of the best Changeling fics out there no wonder you didnt post any updates...
