Well, while my next chapter is being checked for grammer and the like, I decided to catch up on my reading for a bit. One of the stories I read was 'She said No' which, at first I found interesting. I could understand where Twilight was coming from, however I did feel she was being a bit out of character since the Twilight I know whats to help other ponies in need. But I can let it slide since she is mad and not thinking straight. All in all, i thought it was a decent read and considered putting it in my favorites.
Then I got to the second chapter.
A dragon. Really! Not some dark serpent from a forgotten time or a unicorns magic creating the blob? That was the situation that the Elements of Harmony were needed to deal with? ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Celestia, you can move the freakin' sun so I think moving a single dragon should be no problem. And, in the last thousand years, you would think the Royal Guard would have trained or had some kind of plan for something like this since they know for a fact that dragons exist! And then there was the news article with a headline asking where the mane six are instead of talking about the brave guards who lost their lives defending a city instead of sitting on their flanks waiting for somepony else to do their freakin' jobs! The only good part was that Twilight truely regretted her decision not to go but I just felt so much anger that I spent the rest of the day in a rage.
Is there a point to this? Yes, yes there is!
See, I love fanfiction and all the possiblities that writers can come up with. It's one of the reason I began to write myself. But there are some things that people write about that can annoy me and I'm sure there are a few of you out there that feel the same. So I'm going to make a list of thing that have been annoying me on this site. Now this is opinion based and I know there will be those of you out there that won't feel the same. If that is the case then write something in the comments below and explain to me why I'm wrong. Don't just say I'm an idiot or something like that. If I am missing something then please help me understand. I will also do my best not to pick on specific authors too much.
1. Giffons are the bad guys. This one doesn't hit all my rage buttons, but it does annoy me that so many people make them all jerks because of Gilda. When I read fifteen stories about a griffon invasion I do get tired of it. Try, I don't know, donkeys or something. But like I said it's not too terrible.
2. The mane six leaving Ponyville for good. Again, not a big thing since I have read stories were it can work. It is hard, however, because of the emotional connect many of us have with the town. Yet I know that Rarity and Rainbow Dash will one day leave to achieve their dreams. Heck, I'm planning on writing one myself. Still it is something that a lot of us just don't want to think about.
3. Sudden character changes. This can happen to any author on this site, but it can ruin a good story as well as make the reader angry. A while ago I was reading a story were Twilight died while trying to change Nightmare Moon back into Luna. It was dark, but it had a good set up with several good elements even having Celestia becoming so emotional she wants to avenge her fallen student. And what happenes when she finds Luna? They have hot chocolate. I really wish I was kidding. Oh, but it gets better. She then goes to Twilight's family while they are still in mourning the loss of their daughter to tell them that Twilight's death brought back her sister and is surprised that they aren't delighted at this devopment. Then she yells at Shining Armor when he gets angry at her saying that Twilight was like a daughter to her.
A more recent example is from the Golden Armor II which I am still reading and waiting for an update. With this one, it's once again Celestia who brings Comet to her private chambers where Gorgon the changling princess is there waiting acting like she is his dead sister Nova. And then when he loses his temper he gets yelled at. Celestia didn't even give him any warning or prepare him in anyway for this encounter. It was sit down with the bug princess that had you undermind control while she acts like your dead sister whose death you blanme yourself for and have a nice lunch.
Ok, I know a lot of you know how much I...dislike Celestia. But, in both of these examples, Celestia prior to those events had been played out in a good light making good decissions. Her acting like that in both stories put me through a loop and I really, really didn't like it.
4. Prequal stories. I know some people believe that prequals are lesser works because we already know what is going to happen. I disagree because when a prequal is done right it can be very interesting. The best ones I have seen come from the World of Warcraft books. However, there are bad ones. Take, for example, Nightmare Night and Nyx and its prequal Nyx's Family. In Nightmare Night and Nyx, the true history of the three tribes was told as if it either wasn't well known or that it was a big secret. Also, earth pony magic is sutle, not well known, and passed through the generations as done in a lullaby. In Nyx's Family these things are not the case as the true history of the three tribes is treated like a big news event that only someone living in a hole seven miles into the crust of the planet wouldn't know about! And Earth pony magic is what really drove away the winigos. Also, Nyx's Family has two characters that move into the library that weren't there in Nightmare Night and Nyx. When an author does this, it ruins the flow of the story and makes things confusing.
5. Anon. I hate that name. It's so lazy like the author couldn't be bothered to even try to come up with a name. I simply refuse to read any story with a character named Anon!
6. Mega Ponies. In the show as well as in most stories, the three tribes are fairly balance, each with their own traits that only their type can do. From time to time, I see a story where these traits are enchanced in some way ussually through training. I have no problem with this. It makes sense that an earth pony, through years of training, can use earth like a weapon or make his or her feilds grow better. But, when an entire group of ponies becomes so powerful and can do so very easily, it just makes me roll my eyes.
Well, I have to go. I might continue this at a time.
I guess everyone has things that annoy them with fanfiction. Me it is having a character's personality totally rewritten. I mean, if by a major trauma or something I get it, but if they say one day AppleJack Snaps and starts lieing like there is no tomorrow, it just gets me disinterested with that story.
Gotta agree with some of you points here. True, people always hate on the griffons, but I don't think its because of Gilda, I think it has to deal with the whole omnivore v.s herbivore. I rarely see any stories were the minotaurs attack, or the deer. Haven't seen absolutely any where the zebra attack, someone should do that.
Anyways, I also agree with the character changes and OOC characters. Nothing ruins a story for me then bad character portrayals.
Also, total agreeance with the Anon thing! It's dam annoying!
