Season Eight Episode Reviews: Molt Down

This week is a Spike episode? What a re-”molt”-ing development this is!

Let's look at “Molt Down,” the episode that will surely be perfectly normal and have no long-lasting repercussions on a character's appearance.

Season Eight Episode Reviews: Break Up Break Down

I dread going into this week's episode. For today, we discuss matters of the heart. Romance, love, heartbreak, and all that rot. Which means we run right into the most loathsome of all fandom constructs, the kind of thing that destroys friendships and leaves the most brilliant of minds curled up helplessly in a corner, foaming from the mouth:

    SHIPPING.

Sometimes I have...thoughts... · 3:35am Aug 22nd, 2014

When I see stories that revolve around Twilight lashing out at her friends for not believing her insane ramblings about the fake Cadance stealing her brother away, I want to write a fanfic about her lashing out, only to be told that her friends were trying to be supportive, honestly didn't see the same things she did, listened to her rants about how evil her sister-in-law was, and had no way of knowing "Mi Amore Cadenza" was a changeling prior to the reveal. The moral would be that you don't get a free pass on being a jerkass to everyone just because you turned out to be right.

Or perhaps I should just ask why people are still writing about this over two years later.

Honestly I sort of feel the same way sometimes.

Wow people are still writing fix fics about the season 2 finale? When season 5 will start sometime next year? That's surprising.

When I see stories that cast Blueblood as essentially a sociopathic, rapist, serial killer, who bathes in the blood of children, while being able to do what ever the hell he wants because he can whine to Celestia, I get the desire to write a story that points out that the Gala was a less of a formal event, and more of a political show of power in a social event, one where the future of your house, and that of the businesses you own, could depend on if the men you have contracts with, decide to stay with you for another year. And that Rarity was playing the role of a gold digging sycophant. And that countless people judge the entirety of his character on the two minutes he showed up in one episode, and the fact that he used Rarity as a shield, even though she probably jeopardized many possible political and economic dealings which would have hinged on him being a base line royal figure, with a reputation which would have let him act and maneuver freely without the prying gaze of others.

And then I remember most people don't know shit about politics, nor about upper end social meet and greets, such as what the Gala was.

Or perhaps I should just ask why people are still writing about this over two years later.

Are you saying this fandom tends to have new people write stories about situations that are old to the rest of us? Nah, can't be happening.

Surprising... and a little sad.

Seriously, people just need to get over it already! Not only has it been two freaking years, but in the grand scheme of things, the whole scene was just minor compared to everything else! I could understand Mare-Do-Well as that episode had a moral that was genuinely frustrating and contradictory, but when people write these fics, they always focus on that one scene!

But then, I forget that some fans tend to blow certain scenes out of proportion. Even if it's a minor character hiccup or plot hole, people will gather and complain about it all day and they will debate and debate until the rest of the episode will feel largely forgotten to them. Imagine if in "Wrath of Khan", instead of people loving the literary references and loving the space battles, they just focus on the fact that Chekov was not on the bridge during "Space Seed" and write entire epics on how it's not possible. While not entirely the same thing, I feel that's how people seem to perceive this one scene in a two-part episode about an invasion of shapeshifting bug creatures.

Maybe the real reason people complain is that they can't let go. Maybe people are just so upset over something minor that they will freak out about it. Maybe some people can be a little... too into a series. The moment a character steps out of line too much, people will rage on about it, even many years after the fact. Basically, people may just continue writing accusation fics about the episode until the end of time, maybe.

I never understood those people either. While I like getting into shows and movies and analyzing them, I also like to remember that there are constraints that require certain things to happen. Basically, people tend to forget that if the rest of the mane characters believed Twilight, we wouldn't have a two-parter. I'm a Doyalist that way. I'm not saying "don't complain", although I apologize if I come across like that, what I am saying is, there is a time to rip apart the plot holes and inconsistencies and there is a time to just enjoy the show. Basically, people need to learn not to get too hyper about a small scene in an (to me, anyway) awesome two parter.

Then again, I never really cared about that scene when I watched it, I was too busy going " Oh crap, where's that mare sending Twily!?"

TL;DR: Fans are fickle and imperfect.

Mare-Do-Well will never die. And to be fair, it's hard to justify what the Mane 6 did in that episode (ALL of them, including Rainbow Dash). Still, I would like more fics to point out that Dash would have technically failed most of the rescue attempts MDW finished successfully; she really couldn't have done it alone.

In the case of the wedding? Yeah, Twilight was being a clingy jealous sister for the entire first part. It's understandable why everypony wasn't lining up to believe everything she said after so much of that behavior.

2390284

I wouldn't have used those words, but still, a very good point about the Gala, Blueblood, and Rarity's frankly reprehensible reasons for going there to begin with.

2390348

You know, when I saw that on the feature box, I was hoping for an FO:E story.:applejackunsure:

Fix fic are the worse... unless you're going ALL OUT alternate universe, like an Evangelion fic I once read where Shinji ends up learning Geki Jyuken and isn't such a pussy or that one FiM/Naruto crossover where Naruto gets a family in the form of ponies, Sakura learns to be badass from Diamond Dogs and Sasuke isn't such a whiny bitch :rainbowlaugh: Cheap and dirty one chapter fix fics? Augh! :raritydespair:

2390355
Yeah, I agree, some folks really dig into the flaws of the show without considering the meta reality of a cartoon written and made for little girls. Not to say that it shouldn't have criticism or analysis simply because it's a children's show. There's many kids' shows that have a lot of thought and effort put into them, but there are still limits and constraints that we as fanfic writers simply don't have and obviously we could come up with "something way better" than a show with Y-7 Ratings restrictions.

And if House where to pull those stunts of his in a real life hospital, he would be drummed right quick, no matter how right he is. By the same token, no police force would tolerate Sherlock Holmes antics either. :derpytongue2:
More importantly, the reason those shows can get away with it, but MLP:FiM really can't (Or shouldn't) is because MLP is strongly based on providing young children with life lessons to follow, while House is more about providing adults (who know better) with an entertaining character, regardless of how it would work in life.

I'll help co-write it, if you want.

2390357

and Rarity's frankly reprehensible reasons for going there to begin with.

Though in Rarity's defense, she got what she deserved, in the episode itself. Lesson learned.

(Trenderhoof is different in that Rarity didn't seem to want anything out of him, save just to be with him)

2390284

When I see stories that cast Blueblood as essentially a sociopathic, rapist, serial killer, who bathes in the blood of children, while being able to do what ever the hell he wants because he can whine to Celestia

Concur. There's an unfortunate trend in certain parts of the fandom to vastly inflate the actions of our bad characters. But sometimes a jerk is just a jerk and being a jerk is the limit of his jerkdom.

2390409
People let House get away with it because he was good at his job and ultimately saved lives. On a personal level, just about everyone in the show despised him. He got a free pass to keep being a jerk in the office, but from what I recall of the show we're reminded constantly that House being a vicodin-addicted jerk utterly cost him any kind of social life.

2390448
I agree, I just couldn't help but note the correlation between House and Twilight in this instance! :pinkiehappy:
2390455
True that! Twilight should be more considerate!

I never liked Cadence and I stop caring. I'll just keep all the terrible ideas I want to happen to the couple to myself.

It just depends, I'd say the worst of the lot was one that tried to justify Twilight going all evil with an Alicorn mary-sue justifying her beating the hell out of everyone with faux-philosophical speeches that anyone with an actual brain could shoot down

It was like the John Galt of the fix-fic community.

I feel the same way. I like some fixfics, like No Hard Feelings, in which no one gets over the top and pissed off (in fact, they hug it out and it takes place after the episode), but then you have... basically every Canterlot wedding story involving revenge, all the Mare-Do-Well stories involving either a super-villain or Dash getting revenge after the entire town casts her aside like toilet paper, and so forth.

MDW:F is a particularly bad case of Applejack bashing, making Pinkie Pie the author's mouthpiece in the final chapter, having AJ not properly learn the lesson of the story for the sake of it, and having Twilight use the reform spell on herself -with Rarity as proxy spellcaster- to force herself to have her view of empathy and compassion that she feels she lacks.

I will always dislike how the lesson of MDW was botched. I will always dislike that five of the Mane Six just walked away -rather than try to calm and talk her down from her insane rambles- and left Twilight there while Celestia twisted the knife ever so slightly...

But the time for hate is long-since passed. We must as a whole move on.

I agree my friend, it is one of those things that annoy me to no end. I guess they use is as an excuse to bash Celestia and have a dark Twilight. Guess people don't like the idea of forgiveness.

I have worked on something that would at least give some explanation to at least Celestia's side. Though it would have less to do with the Mane6 and more with the Royal Guard holding off the invasion. For God Sake's people their CO was compromised, if Chrysalis is as smart as you all want to her to be the first she would have done was screw around with the guard details and weaken the defenses around the castle... but noooo... you have to make the ERG incompetent and make it look like Chrysalis just got lucky.... *cough* sorry

2390804 Yeah. Just like those people that say Celestia didn't use her full power against Chrysalis because she didn't want to hurt her ponies or some shit like that.

I'll admit the scene did bug me a little, since the lesson in Lesson Zero was all about listening to your friend's concerns no matter what. But Twilight was jumping to conclusions (lesson from previous episode) and made herself look clingy and jealous. Did not exactly make her look good. Plus even the best of friends make mistakes, and show an occasional bad side. You think the fans would realize it by now.

It's cathartic. Plain and simple.

2390357

In the case of the wedding? Yeah, Twilight was being a clingy jealous sister for the entire first part. It's understandable why everypony wasn't lining up to believe everything she said after so much of that behavior.

I don't think it was that clear clut. I think the best version I've read about the wedding aftermath was by Darth Link 22. And if you watch the episode, everyone makes excuses for Cadence bitchy attitude, yet no one says hey, maybe twilight is frustrated cause her brother invited her to his wedding, even though he never even bothered to tell her he was dating or engaged, the day before it occurs, her interactions with his fiance are less than pleasant, and her friends are the target of those unpleasantries. I think she deserves some lee way too, despite having been right. Twilight has a freak out and accuses Cadence of brainwashing, and the one to defend her is the one accused of being brainwashed. During normal circumstances it would be normal to doubt, but remember they are under lockdown due to an imminent unseen threat, so why not just take a quick look? I mean come on, Cadence was a bitch, whom they just met, they just shrug and allow it, but with Twilight, who they are best friends with, they basically abandon her. Thats fucked up. I once got into a fight cause my friend was a dumbass, and I told him he was a dumbass the next day, but I've got my friends back even when he's wrong.

I do think their behavior is odd, and added something after the scene for one (unfinished) story, but it's only to explain it. Namely they were just following Celestia's lead. Something which I was for some reason under the impression happened in the actual show but it was the other way around. I now have to apparently rewrite the scene because I remembered it wrong. The point is that I so hated that moment that I wanted some explanation why none of them even thought of taking her side. Though that being said Twilight being mad at them about it is even more out of character for her, because it really was the reasonable response. It's just the lesson of Lesson Zero means they should have a least hesitated before dismissing her fears.

2390357 As to Mare do well, it's actually really easy. They all screwed up and because Dash either Dash is so loyal, or didn't realize how wrong they were, didn't call them out on it I mean you have the lingering question of, when did the rest of the mane six think this was a good idea, but it's not some unanswerable question.

and again i have never seen anything that you are complaining about in your journal posts here.....

I don't think it's unreasonable. A newcomer could feel inspired by that scene, an 'old timer' could look at the scene and realize something they hadn't before, or perhaps a person may finally get around to putting out a story that's been rattling around in their heads since that episode first aired.

2390386
Could you link that? I'd like to check it out. Anything that can utilize the Diamond Dogs, and make Sakura someone to root for.

2393258 Here you go. Not by all means perfect and it does take a while to get going, but when the kids go to Equestria for a year it gets pretty cool. Too bad it sits incomplete... but then again so does the real Naruto story so far so I guess it's excusable :derpytongue2:
