What type of story is Dogs, anyway? · 10:58pm Aug 12th, 2014
I marked it as an Adventure, but that doesn't quite feel right. Sure, the Diamond Dogs are on an adventure into strange and foreign lands from their point of view, but does that count if they're treading ground with which the readers are already familiar? Since we're seeing the world through their eyes, I want this to feel like an adventure, but I'm not sure I've succeeded so far.
From the ponies' perspective, this would be closer to Slice of Life. It's just another day in the life of the Princess of Friendship, dealing with weird foreigners who need to have some knowledge dropped on them about how awesome friendship is.
If I could, I would mark the story as both Adventure and Slice of Life to reflect this, but that's not allowed.
What should I call it, then?
Wonderful, that's what I call it! Though others might see it more as a slice of life since it's about a clash of cultures, and you do a great job explaining the outside perspective. It's wonderful and I hope it hasn't been abandoned because that would be an utter shame for this excellent look at the the other side of an issue to never be finished.
It depends on the level of action and the character's perspective of the events. Crazy stuff happens in Ponyville all the time, but this is from the Diamond Dogs' point of view, to them it would be unbelievable.
For example "The Secret of NIMH", was partially about humanity, but from a mouse's eyes, not quite slice of life in that light. Hope that helps.
