Writing Fears · 2:13am Aug 2nd, 2014

What are yours? What are those things you're terrified of when you're writing anything? Poetry, fanfiction, letters, anything. Mine is repeating myself. I have a digital thesaurus at my side at all times when I write because I hate using the same words over and over again. Synonyms are my friend.

When it comes to characters, I get worse. I have to come up with ways to refer to a character without just saying "she" or Applejack. If it's a thing, like the Drone, I get worse. I really only had two good ways to refer to it. "The Zerg worker" and the "Drone." I hate doing that. It makes me feel stupid.

Since no one posted on this yet, I'll be the first. :twilightsheepish:
I suppose my fear is of having characters behave in an uninteresting or unnatural way. I know I have plenty of issues with writing, actually following through with a story of any length being one of them, but I also feel characters are one of the biggest make-or-break elements to a story. So, having them and their interactions so easy to get wrong concerns me.

Also, I heard you generally don't want to introduce 'too' much variation to how you refer to a character. :raritywink: I think it's more often used to familiarity/context rather than flourish, and other parts of the surrounding text can likely make up for it with more impactive imagery.
Or something.
