Mythril Moth's Pet Peeves of Voice Acting · 8:43pm Jul 29th, 2014
There's one thing that I really hate when it comes to voice acting in animation:
Voice actors who do an impression of an impression (of an impression...of an impression...of an impression...)
There are certain legendary actors, most of them from before the 70s, who had very distinctive voices.
They usually didn't do voiceover work for cartoons, so cartoon voiceover artists would do impressions of them.
Then, years or even decades later, successive generations of voiceover artists would do impressions...of those impressions.
It's like a tenth generation Xerox. It's so far removed from the original that it's just painful.
The number one offender is, of course, Paul Lynde impressions. The one thing I hate about Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch is Salem. Salem is easy enough to hate on his own merits because he's an annoying character. But the reason I really loathe him is because of that fucking horrible Paul Lynde impression.
How bout those people who try to imitate Bill Cosby? Or, make Mark Twain sound like a nasty Colonel Sanders?
Haw.
There are plenty of good voice actors nowadays. Like Jim Cummings or Rob Paulson.
Can they beat legends like Mel Blanc? Probably not, but I still try to give credit where credit is due.
2326940 I'm not disputing that. But that wasn't the point of this post.
The point of this post was voice actors doing bad impressions of impressions of other actors who are NOT voice actors.

I'm not familiar with Sabrina. Is there a video showing the difference?
2327011 I doubt there's really a comparison video. Best way to compare them is to find a clip of anything Paul Lynde did (which won't be a problem at all), and then try to find a clip of Sabrina that has Salem speaking.
But take my word for it, it's a HORRENDOUS Paul Lynde impression.
2332024 I'm talking about the CGI series currently running on the Hub, where Salem has a TERRIBLE Paul Lynde impression for a voice.
2332081 Nope. I've never had any interest in anything Kirby-related, really.
