Does anyone else have a problem with "Fifty Shades of Grey"? (possible spoilers) · 9:15pm Jul 25th, 2014
Maybe it's just me but I do. I really do. I'm not against BDSM but what I read and when I saw the trailer... That was, to say the least, different.
I have nothing wrong with porn writing/romance because that's what I write sometimes. My problem is the way the book was executed. I know some people say it's a love story and I can't see it and, yes, maybe I just don't see that but just hear me out. It seems like he stalks her, manipulates her, preys on her shy, weak, sexually negated self and uses it to his advantage. He says he likes control and I have no problem with guys that like control, whether it be semi or full control but as long as it is consensual and not manipulative. He basically traps her into this sexual trap using his manipulative personality, which a guy like him very well knows he has, and gets her to be his little play thing. Yes, she thinks she loves him, yes she enjoys herself during certain scenes but it just doesn't seem right, I suppose. He basically is using her. He doesn't even know her and he's all like "Have sex with me, sign this contract, meh, meh, meh." I'm sorry I'm ranting but it just gets on my nerves when hollywood and authors ruin something I like. Like, I don't know, vampires *Cough* Twilight *cough*
BDSM can be a very romantic and a very bonding experience/lifestyle with your partner and I feel like "Fifty Shades of Grey" abuses the practice. Through the way the characters act, respond, and thought process. There's a very big difference between BDSM and abuse, it's called consent and tricking someone, who has a very bad opinion about herself and she is not fully developed in the way to say "no", into being your toy is not consent.
I'm shy and I'm submissive and I'm still not that strong of character, I wasn't at all and would do anything for anybody up until my senior year of high school so reading the book and watching the trailer just doesn't sit right with me. Ana kind of reminded me of me in the beginning of middle school, personality wise, so I immediately got connected to her. And then by the end of the book I was like "The asshole doesn't deserve you! STOP BEING SAD OMGOSH!!!"
So, yeah.
Again, my opinion, not fact. Apparently it's a 50k likes to 3k dislike factor on the trailed on youtube so maybe I'm just weird.
Also, I think about all the poor girls that read this and think this is romance because, just in case you don't know, IT IS NOT. That is a man who knows what he's doing and abusing his power and abilities to manipulate a young girl into being his play thing. Remember Twilight? How every girl (other than the Jacob lovers) adored him? Well...
And again he basically manipulated her but I won't go into Twilight cause I hated it. It could have been so much better but it wasn't. It sucked.
What do you guys think?
I heard of the book and its plot, and just thought of it as Seven Shades of Shit.
I am sorry to anyone who actually likes the book, and I am sorry if I offended you by my comment.
What's always bothered me about the fifty shades series was that it was modified fanfiction. We've all read a thousand good fan fics that have better story than gift shades, but don't lend themselves to transmogrification into something "original" like fifty shades did with its empyrean characters that only served to put known characters into sexual situations. Hell, ive read cool that had stories better than fifty shades, but they'll never reach an audience outside of this site because they actually have well thought out (by he creators) and we'll writen (by the authors) characyees
