Destiny Beta: My Verdict · 7:02am Jul 25th, 2014
I have quit, and returned on four separate occasions, each time wanting to be impressed.
Unfortunately, my initial fear was confirmed. Destiny is a child of Halo and Borderlands.
An ugly, red-headed stepchild.
Even though it's a beta, there are not enough side quests to ensure a proper leveling pace, and I had to consistently play underleveled, which didn't prove to be a problem until the "Hard" version of the last mission. (I was level 6, enemies were leveled to 8.) I would've much rather preferred a beta akin to The Old Republic, where the entire thing was opened up, the leveling pace is normal (I'm told it was accelerated in the alpha and beta) and you just get as far as you can in 2-3 days.
Public events were also a headache. Players would gather, then one by one, leave, eventually leaving me to get slaughtered continually by enemies that are meant to be taken on as a group.
Enemy AI is annoying and very cheap. It seems Bungie got addicted to their Drone and Skirmisher AI behavior from Halo. Except this time they added projectiles that curve and home in on you, making darting in and out of cover a useless endeavor. The only enemy fire I was able to evade was the Wizard bolts. Melee enemies always come at you en masse, and that's very frustrating when you've only got 24 rounds to a clip, and your shotgun only has 5 shells, and you can't fire mid-reload.
I will not even get started on the Crucible, the PVP arena. Absolute garbage. I played one match, I got one kill, and my team got absolutely destroyed 1850-750. Glad to see you're putting all that matchmaking experience from Halo to work, Bungie.
The ONLY thing I truly enjoyed was the music, especially at the end of the Devil's Lair. Unfortunately, the source of that music was fired a few months ago, but hey, at least he took $95,000 in his lawsuit settlement.
All in all...
Titanfall > Destiny
Yeah I said it. Come at me, Bungie fanboys.
i would have to say that giving that view on it from the BETA is kinda foolish. of course they do not have things leveled out yet, that is what a beta is for!
Sounds like a few things need nerfing...
2314407 Piss off. Were you one of the crowd giving me shit for not liking Dark Souls, too?
2314384 They did a beta for feedback. There's my feedback.
2314426 feedback to improve i think they seek.
2314432 Crucible needs major tweaking. There's no shortage of that over on Bnet.
Miles, what the fuck is wrong with you? I said I was joking, Jesus Christ I'm unfollowing you if you won't take a chill pill.

2314384 Game comes out in a few months to you expect a massive overhaul?
The game will stay an ugly redheaded step child.
2314557 if they did not care about balancing shit then they would not give a beta. in fact they would go alien colonial marines and keep people from playing it as much as possible.

LOL JK. But yes I do see your issues with it and the mechanics are a bit...used. Still, this is the beta. I do hope they chane some things, but I didn't see anything MAJORLY wrong with it. To each their own I suppose.
2314561 They better balance things or I will not play it.
But, that doesnt stop it from being a mutant hybrid of Halo and Borderlands.
2314565 mutants are cool so. shrug.
Destiny is pretty much Halo mixed with borderlands, i'm playing it right now and the enemies feel exactky like Halo enemies. Grunts, eleites ect...
And the infinite weapons is akin to that of Borderlands, I have a machine gun that deals 65 damage that sets enemies on fire' i'm level 6
Oh wow, I just found a weapon that is pretty much the Battle Rifle from Halo they couldn't resist could they?
Oh and the crucible? You can't kill a lvl fucking 8!! Their shields are jsut so fucking OP!

Rant typo
As a Bungie fanboy...
Eenope. You're totally right. Fuck that game.
A lot of your problems with it as far as the combat goes just seem to be you not being able to properly adapt to the situation. I play as a Warlock (weakest class health-wise, by far) that only uses Hand Cannons and Sniper Rifles, and I have no trouble taking care of melee enemies or dodging incoming fire.
2318653 Enemy fire that homes in is still cheap. But I think I may fare better as a Titan.
2318673 Titans are powerhouses, definitely. I just made one today, and I can brutalize everything with my fist. It's barely fair.
2319530 The one thing I didn't like is how the flashbang bounces, after I had gotten used to the vortex grenade detonating on impact.
2319532 I've gotten used to just tossing all the throwable things right at the enemy so it hits them. Either it detonates on impact with their body, or it bounces off like a foot away and then blows up.
