An apostrophe is the same thing as a single quote mark, and quotes separate words, so "t" is a word by itself. This happens with a lot of computer word-counting algorithms. Not saying it's "right" just not really a fault in FimFiction itself.

2308751 It's not faulty, at least in this case. In fact, in many universities and formal tests (such as the Cambridge English exam), contractions are normally counted as the number of words they'd expand out to. That said, your example is mostly "luck" that it got it right. If you'd used a possessive, like "It was her's and she was keeping it" then it'd probably fail.
The reason is because it's hard to tell where a word starts and ends with accuracy. To a human, that's trivial. We just "know" what a word is. The computer has to have rules for what indicates a word-break though, and that can get tricky, as there's no "always right" answer without actually having something that can parse grammar, and that's typically not worth the computational overhead just for a word count. So most systems just have a list of "these characters are usually word breaks" and that list is typically summed up as "any punctuation or white space" or in others, "just white space." One gives bad results in some situations, the other screws up others. Bottom line is basically nobody will probably ever agree on how many words are in the following example sentence, and neither will their computers.
But technical nitpickery aside... have fun at Bronycon! Jealous I can't go to that one, but I already got two pony cons in this year, so I've had my fun.
